What are Essential Oils?

When you hear the word Aromatherapy, you may think of scented candles or a fragrant bubble bath. At Inshanti, aromatherapy is the use of pure essential oils for the healing of body, mind, and spirit. Essential oils are nature's gift - coming from the plant kingdom where they are found in specialized cells of virtually any part of certain plants: seeds, flowers, fruit, leaves, stems, roots, bark, wood, needles, and resins. Essential oils are highly aromatic substances. Technically, when this substance is in the plant, it is called an "essence." After distillation of a single type of plant, the aromatic substance is referred to as an essential oil. Essential oils have been in existence for thousands of years being some of the oldest and most powerful therapeutic agents known exhibiting significant antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and hormone-balancing qualities. They are used in products for health, beauty, and hygiene.

How are Essential Oils Used?

When we blend these amazing oils, they create products used for medicinal purposes, massage therapy, skin and hair care, and even household cleaning products. Bath salts, scrubs and fizzys, diffusers, inhalers and sprays are several types of popular essential oil products, many of which are available through Inshanti and the Inshanti on-line shoppe.

How will Essential Oils help me?

Aromatherapy relates to olfaction - the body's sense of smell. The actual odor floating around in a room is made of molecules. These molecules then go through the nose and pass over fibers that are made of specialized nerve cells that can interpret what the specific smell is. This information is sent up to the limbic system which is the part of your brain regulating emotions. Essential oils can provide relief from anxiety and fear; give a sense of well-being and relaxation, help with emotional balancing, medicinal purposes, and so much more.

For many centuries, essential oils and other aromatics were used for religious rituals, the treatment of illness, and other physical and spiritual needs.

How are Essential Oils Absorbed in the Body?

The chemistry of essential oils is very complex. The chemical structure of an essential oil can penetrate cell membranes, travel throughout the blood system and tissues, and enhance cellular function.

Most essential oils, although highly concentrated, do not appear "oily". As oils, they are lighter than water and highly fluid. They are primarily lipid (fat) soluble rather than water-soluble allowing for easy, fast penetration into the skin and bloodstream. Oils are absorbed through capillaries, lymph ducts or the lungs (when oils are inhaled). Once applied to the skin or inhaled, the body takes about 30-90 minutes to entirely absorb the essential oils. Strong blood circulation increases absorption rate.

Are Inshanti Essential Oils Pure?

Essential oils are not the same as perfumes or fragrance oils. Many synthetic oils on the market today replicate the fragrances of natural oils, and many people unknowingly use them, hoping to derive their benefits. The synthetic chemicals that create these products do not contain the beneficial properties of pure plant oils. Only pure essential oils can provide the valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. It takes a large amount of plant material to make a small amount of oil. For example, it takes more than 30 roses to produce 1 drop of Rose Essential Oil! A half-ounce of pure essential oil can last a long time, since only small amounts need to be used for their intended medicinal effects.

Many factors affect the quality of the essential oil. Inshanti offers essential oils that are either certified organic, wild crafted or unsprayed. Each batch of oil has been tested with Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). All of the essential oils, carrier oils, butters, unscented lotions, Castille soap, and natural Himalayan Salts used at Inshanti are free of chemicals, herbicides and pesticides. Inshanti does not use synthetic oils or oils extracted by chemical solvents.

Once an essential oil is tested, Inshanti formats the chemical constituents into chemical families for therapeutic blending purposes. Inshanti is dedicated to knowing exactly what they are purchasing and blending for you. Testing every batch of oil purchased with GC/MS technology assures purity and gives the exact chemistry of each oil. Inshanti believes this process is vital for medicinal blending and for quality assurance.

How Does Inshanti Blend Essential Oils?

Chemistry is the science of aromatherapy. Essential oils are made up of naturally occurring chemical constituents. Based on chemical makeup, the oils are grouped into families. These families tell us about the therapeutic properties of the oils. Inshanti blends essential oils using these chemical families:

  • Ether - Oils high in Ethers are great anti-spasmodics.
  • Monoterpenes - Airborne deodorizers, stimulates a decongestion activity for whole body, antiseptic, rubifacient.
  • Sesquiterpenes - Anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, cicatrisant, sedative. See individual oils for details.
  • Monoterpenols - Anti-infectious, immune stimulants over the long term, healing for the skin, emotionally balancing.
  • Sesquiterpenols - Anti-inflammatory, cooling, grounding, supports terrain. See individual oils for details.
  • Aldehydes - Strongly antifungal, sedative, cooling, anti-inflammatory.
  • Ketones - Strong mucolytic, antiviral, calming in small amounts/stimulating in large amounts.
  • Esters - Anti-spasmodic, calming to the nervous system, healing for the skin, sometimes anti-inflammatory.
  • Oxides - Strong healing oils for the respiratory system (decongesting), anti-viral, mentally stimulating.
  • Phenols - Anti-infectious, analgesic, anti-inflammatory. Used in acute illnesses and infections.

Some Inshanti blends contain Herbally Infused Oil. These are oils that carry the medicinal properties of certain herbs. Carrier oil is infused with the medicinal herb, the plant is strained off, and the remaining oil can be used directly on the skin.
