"Saints Row" was THQ's most popular game series in recent years. European publisher Koch Media paid $22.2 million for the game and its developer, Volition Inc.

THQ bankruptcy auction closes; video game rivals pick up assets

THQ? RIP.

The Agoura Hills video game publisher that only five years ago had a market value of more than $2 billion sold most of its assets at a bankruptcy auction that closed on Tuesday.

Games in development and production studios owned by THQ were bought by a variety of competitors for a total of $72 million, according to documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. That exceeded a "stalking horse" bid THQ had from private investment firm Clearlake Capital Group, which offered to take the entire company private for $60 million.

Founded in 1989 as a toy company, THQ grew to become a...

Netflix stock soars in after-hours trading on subscriber adds

Netflix Inc. ended a volatile year on a high note, beating expectations for revenue and subscriber growth in the fourth quarter, which ended Dec. 31 -- sparking a nearly 35% spike in the company's stock in after-hours trading.

Holiday sales of consumer electronics devices -- particularly Internet-connected smart TVs and tablets -- contributed to a "particularly strong" season for the subscription movie and TV service, Chief Executive Reed Hastings said in a note to shareholders.

"The rise of tablets, smartphones and smart TVs are very helpful to us," Hastings said during the earnings call...

FX, home of "Sons of Anarchy," may get a sister channel.

Cable channels are valuable real estate regardless of the tenant

To most TV viewers, cable networks are programming outlets.

To their owners, however, channels are real estate to be held onto regardless of what the tenants have done to the property.

That's the case with the Fox Soccer Channel. News Corp.'s Fox is considering turning the channel into an entertainment network similar to the company's FX channel. The names being kicked around include FX2 and FXX.

There are several reasons Fox is thinking about rebranding the channel, which is currently in nearly 50 million homes. For starters, its ratings are not great. On top of that, Fox Soccer recently lost...

Time Warner Cable says one thing but does another when it comes to sports.

Time Warner Cable's split personality with TV sports

Few cable companies have been as vocal about the rising costs of sports programming as Time Warner Cable.

"What was a minor problem is turning into an astronomical problem," Time Warner Cable chief executive Glenn Britt told the Wall Street Journal just over a year ago. "The ultimate solution is to get that programming on some sort of smaller packaging scheme."

But Britt's words don't match up with Time Warner Cable's actions. As of late, few cable companies have been as instrumental in driving up sports costs as Time Warner Cable.

The latest example of Time Warner Cable's split personality is...

Dodgers to get own TV home! Pilot season in full bloom.

After the coffee. Before my cable bill goes up again.

The Skinny: I'm trying to create a fake girlfriend, but I can't decide between a blond or brunette. Send your thoughts. Wednesday's headlines include coverage of the Dodgers' pending deal with Time Warner Cable, a look at pilot season and a piece on how ESPN missed the Manti Te'o story.

Daily Dose: ABC is pulling the plug on its sitcom "Don't Trust the B---- in Apt 23." The twisted sitcom, about a selfish girl who has no problems tormenting her friends to get what she wants, was a critical darling but failed to attract many viewers.

TMZ trims graphic footage of shooting victim following protests

Gossip website TMZ.com re-edited graphic footage of a 19-year-old man being shot to death outside a Hollywood nightclub, following an online protest from the teen's family that drew support from more than 212,000 people.

The family of the victim, Andre Lowe of South Los Angeles, publicly called on TMZ.com to take down the shaky, hand-held video showing a fist fight that spread into a melee, and ended with two shots being fired and the young man sprawled motionless on the pavement.

"My family found out about the video when they came home from the hospital where Andre died," said Lowe's uncle,...

Super Bowl spots and Web ads aid surge in L.A. commercial shoots

At the Apache Stages in North Hollywood this month, the Wonderful Pistachios brand filmed South Korean pop star Psy shooting its first Super Bowl commercial, with a riff on Psy's massive "Gangnam Style" YouTube video.

The ad was part of Wonderful Pistachios' "Get Crackin" campaign, which has also featured boxer Manny Pacquiao, rapper Snoop Dogg and other celebrities in various nutty commercials — all of them filmed in Los Angeles.

The flurry of high-profile Super Bowl spots in recent months, along with the proliferation of Web-based commercials, is helping power a surge in commercial...

Plans advance to revive "One Life to Live" and "All My Children"

Prospect Park's project to revive the canceled soap operas "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" as Internet productions is advancing with newly signed contracts with several actors from the long-running ABC shows.

After more than a year clearing hurdles, Prospect Park earlier this month finalized pacts with Hollywood talent guilds SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America. The firm said Tuesday that it had closed deals with several prominent actors, including Erika Slezak, who will reprise her role as Victoria Lord Buchanan for the online version of "One Life to Live."

The animated movie "Frankenweenie" debuted at No. 1 on the DVD sales chart.

'Frankenweenie' tops DVD sales chart

The Tim Burton-directed animated feature "Frankenweenie" debuted at the top of the DVD sales charts, while "Looper" remained the most popular rental in the U.S. in the second week of January.

The horror movie "House at the End of the Street," meanwhile, was the most popular video-on-demand rental.

Walt Disney Studios' animated films have remained relatively popular purchases amid a long-running DVD slump, and "Frankenweenie" continued that trend, despite not having performed well at the box office.

Other new releases during the week ended Jan. 13 that it beat out on the sales chart included...
