Sony reveals Xperia Tablet Z with thin form factor, impressive specs

Unfortunately, the darn thing is currently slated for a Japan-only release.

Sony today announced the Xperia Tablet Z, a 10.1-inch slate-like device that will go up against other major players in the tablet game, such as Apple's iPad and Samsung's Nexus 10 Android tablet.

The 10.1-inch Xperia Tablet Z will sport a 1920x1200 resolution and will run Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine 2, the company's image-quality enhancement engine for photos and videos. The device will be fueled by a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon SoC (the 28nm APQ8064, which is also used in the tablet's recently announced Xperia Z baby brother smartphone) and Android Jelly Bean 4.1, and it will have a water- and dust-proof chassis. The device's 8.1 megapixel camera will take advantage of Sony's Exmore R sensor, which should enable it to take detailed pictures in low-light situations. The Xperia Tablet Z will also feature LTE and NFC capabilities and come in black or white.

Engadget is reporting that the Tablet Z will feature a 6,000mAh battery pack. It will be a relatively thin 6.9mm and weigh only a pound (about 495 grams). No word yet on when the tablet will be made available, only that it's coming to Japan "this spring"—it's unclear at this point whether or not the tablet will see a North American release.
