Machineguns. Silencers. Cane Guns. Knife guns. All of these rare and unique items are regulated under the NFA. What is the "NFA"?

NFA. The National Firearms Act of 1934 regulated the sale and possession of certain weapons including machineguns and sawed off shotguns. With the roaring twenties came bootlegging, the rolling gangsters, and infamous criminals such as Al Capone. Though intended to sell newspapers, the sensationalism of the rolling bandits and the St Valentines Day massacre brought about public outcries to regulate machineguns. This resulted in the National Firearms Act of 1934. Private ownership of these weapons was not restricted provided the weapons were registered and the federal tax paid. Today most states still allow private ownership of these weapons. These weapons have also been used in wars by most armies and used by various government agencies in their duties to protect their leaders. That briefcase in the hands of a secret service agent may not have papers inside: it may have a submachinegun capable of being fired from within the briefcase!  That writing pen may not be a pen at all: it may be a single shot firearm.
