'You big jerk!': Katie Couric falls for Charlie Sheen prank as he feigns stage fright moments before appearing on her show

Charlie Sheen dramatically declared to Katie Couric's talk show on Tuesday that he 'will never marry again'.

But it seems the real excitement happened behind-the-scenes of the daytime chat show Katie.

Just minutes before going on-air, Charlie Sheen pulled a prank on Katie, telling her he was too nervous to be on her show.

Stage fright: 'I'm stuttering, I'm sweating,' the star told Katie, playing off his reputation for behaving erratically

A hidden video-camera shows Charlie sitting on a couch in a room backstage, looking visibly agitated.

'I don't know if I can do the show today,' the star mumbles to Katie.

The talk show host is shown standing over him, looking confused.

'Why?' she asks, caught seemingly unawares by his statement.

'I just can't put a sentence together,' he says, throwing up his hands. 'I'm stuttering, I'm sweating, I just don't feel...I have no confidence'.

Katie is then shown sitting next to the Anger Management star, clasping his wrist in an attempt to comfort the seemingly distraught actor.

'Can we call your therapist?' she asks earnestly, to which Charlie jokes, 'I fired him.'

Katie leaves the room to give the actor a moment to calm down. When she re-enters, she realises the joke is on her.

'I'm doing the show, come on, give me a hug,' Charlie says magnanimously, his arms outstretched.

'You big jerk,' Katie says as he envelops her in a bear hug.

Katie can't be blamed for falling for Charlie's nervous act after the actor suffered a public breakdown in 2011.

There were other surprises during the show.

At one point, Charlie declared he will never get married again.

The sitcom star said he has learnt his lesson after three failed marriages and doesn't ever want to tie the knot again.

The 47-year-old star suggested speculation that he and Couric were an item would be hilarious, joking: 'That'd be awesome! Just the rumour, wouldn't it?'

Katie replied: 'Maybe for you.'
