Thief steals wallet from baby's lap in South Seattle

SEATTLE -- In what could possibly be a new low for crime, somebody robbed a baby last Friday evening in South Seattle.

A mother placed her wallet on her baby's lap While attempting to transfer the baby and its car seat from her car to her stroller in a parking lot in the 3800 block of Rainier Avenue South.

Just as she got the baby and car seat out of the car, someone pushed her from behind, knocking her and the baby to the ground, according to the Seattle Police Department report for the incident.

According to the report, someone then reached around the mother and grabbed her wallet from the crying baby's car seat before running off.

The mother told officers she didn't look to see who took the wallet because she was too busy making sure her baby was OK.

She ended up taking the baby to the hospital in Edmonds. And while neither she nor her baby were injured, the mother didn't have time to report the robbery until the following day.

Who's the victim here? The baby?

Geez KOMO, get yer headlines straight.

'Ignorant mother risks childs life by leaving cash and credit cards in baby's possesion'.

It would be a new low for a crime had the wallet actually belonged to the baby.

Like taking candy from a baby.

That will teach the baby of what happens when you don't secure your wallet.

While attempting to transfer the baby and its car seat- A BABY IS NOT A IT!!! Besides that point, the mother had time to go to the hospital, but not report this crime. I will have to assume the worse and say that baby is being abuse and now the mother needs a cover up story for marks on the baby.

A baby is an 'it'...  without a name, or any other supporting information such as gender or even a name, the baby, and its car seat were transfered to the car..  The term it in this case is possessive to the baby. If there was a name, or sex of the child...baby boy, baby girl, the sentence struture would have been referencing his or her car seat, depending upon the name. This would also be a possessive in nature, meaning that it was his or her car seat.

Obviously english may not be your primary language, due to the other errors in your writing.

A baby is not a it,,  should be a baby is not an it

that baby is being abuse... should be that baby is being abused..

@Mr. HEnglish is a constantly changing language. Look at the difference between modern American English and Chaucer or even UK/Canadian usage. I don't think this is an ESL problem, but a movement toward using smart-whatevers and tablets, and away from spellcheck. It's just the way twentysomethings write.

@Mr. H  Technically it should be "his/her" car seat, not "its," but I wouldn't consider this a mistake.

@Just my say Relax, they probably used the word "it" so they wouldn't have to say the gender of the baby. Or KOMO doesn't know the gender....

How the hell do you "not have time" to report it? I will MAKE time. I'm pretty sure that's a good excuse for being late anywhere. I'm thinking even God would understand. Not calling the police and not getting your baby checked out right there? I wouldn't have even moved without getting him/her checked right there. What if he/she hit it's head on the ground? This lady is crazy. Somethings up with her.

She ended up taking the baby to the hospital in Edmonds. And while neither she nor her baby were injured, the mother didn't have time to report the robbery until the following day.

Yeah because god knows a phone call would take way to long. I'm betting she spent her money on something else and didn't want her husband to find out,or she's looking for a sympathetic handout from viewers who feel sorry for her. I'm not buying it at all! What did she tell the hospital ?  the hospital  would've called the police right then and there if she told them this same story.

I smell a Rat, but then again anything is possible on Rainier Ave South

Didn't report this until the following day?  Something smells fishy around here.

I like how misleading that headline is. Almost makes you think the E trade baby was robbed. LOL! So she didn't have time to report till the next day? And on top of that, she drives from Rainier Avenue all the way to a hospital in Edmonds, then Edmonds police says she has to wait until she was back in Seattle to call SPD, so she waits until the next morning to call because she was so late getting back? Well I sure would like to see what her priorities are!

@Zoso Down lower in the thread the reporter noted that she did call 911 from the Hospital, but SPD said she had to file a report in person..due to the late hour leaving the hospital she waited until the next day. Seems like it should be part of the story...

@aintno1special In addition, I'd say she is lucky! The guy had her wallet, which I assume had her driver's liscense, and with all that driving around for no real reason apparently, she's lucky she didn't get pulled over for some reason. Chances are, she probably would've told her story to the cop, the cop would probably check up for any 911 reports, depending on what she may tell him, and the cop wouldn't be finding anything that would check out and wouldn't buy her story, especially if she was on that long drive back from Edmonds, therefore she would be busted for driving without a liscense.  Yeah I wouldn't say there's something fishy about her, she's probably just plain dumb!

@aintno1special Yeah I just read that and edited! That just makes it even so much better! This woman is nuts! Altho I'm glad to finally have the edit option back again. :)

Story is fairly unbelievable as written. Doesn't call 911 after an attack (which would have allowed the perp to be caught, perhaps.)  Drove from Rainier Ave South, all the way to a hospital in Edmonds?  Didn't have "time" to call the police?  Doesn't sound terribly credible as written.   Where was she going in the stroller at night on Rainier Avenue South?  Why didn't she contact anyone at the place she was going to, when she brought out the stroller?

Had to wait for the drugs to wear off perhaps?  Didn't go to Harborview because they already have her ID'd as a "seeker"?   Oh, the possibilities are endless.  She could have had a perfectly logical reason too.  Should be interesting to find out the truth.

I call B.S. on this story.

Did not have time to call the police until the next day?  Right.

Odd sequence of events or not, the Rainier Avenue South location lends some credibility to the story.

She called komonews before the police, otherwise this story wouldn't exist, yet still, no one cares anyway.

@AdAckbar Not sure if you are being serious or not.  I believe the author was reading from a police report.  I doubt that this woman had any contact with KOMO.  Also, "It's a TRAP!"

I would have called 911 at the scene. Clearly if she drove to Edmonds there was no reason she could not wait for police and aid to arrive.

Does not sound like a reasonable sequence of events.....IMO

If the mother was so concerned about her baby, why did she drive to Edmonds???  There are plenty of  hospitals much closer she could have gone to.

I have a feeling the baby momma isn't being truthful.

@KRM66 My thought went to perhaps it was where they were from, and where the baby's pediatrician is. She may have noted the baby not really injured, but wanted it checked out?

KRM66
KRM66

@aintno1special @KRM66  It could be where she is from, or where the pediatrician is, but I still don't understand why she wouldn't go to the nearest facility if she was concerned about her child.

aintno1special
aintno1special

@KRM66 I've worked with some foreign nationals and they are not comfortable with change in doctors or other things. It does not say what her nationality is, but this is another possible reason for her trip to Edmonds.

aintno1special
aintno1special

@KRM66 I don't know, there is a lot that seems suspect, but hard to tell when someone is in a mild panic mode..you do what is comfortable and familiar to you?

KRM66
KRM66

Actually, did a quick search, and she passed at least 7 different urgent care facilities on her way to Edmonds.   Not sure why she chose Edmonds, but I know if it was my child, I would have gone to the nearest facility.

Sorry, going to have to be a grammar Nazi here and point out subject verb agreement rules for correlating conjunctions.

@Iarehere According to the report, she took the baby to a hospital in Edmonds and called 911 there. But, Edmonds police said she had to wait until she was back in Seattle to call SPD. So, getting home late from the hospital, she just waited until the next morning.
