Meet the New MediaFire!

February 27th, 2013

We live in a dynamically changing environment and it requires all of us to frequently review our standards and raise the bar. MediaFire is no exception. Even though our website has always been quite easy to use, we never stop looking for new ways to make things better! Release 7.0 is here, bringing some exciting changes to your MediaFire experience!

We’re thrilled to introduce a brand new design: the interface has been cleaned up and streamlined, and the overall color scheme is optimized to let you focus better on your content. You can still easily navigate all your files on your “My Files” page, add new ones, view them or collaborate – everything works as usual, except much cleaner and ready for the future!

Got pictures in your account? Go ahead and view them in our sleek new Photo Viewer! The dark color scheme creates a great contrast that makes your photo viewing experience much more sophisticated. Access all the photo viewing modes and options on the bottom of the page, or share, download, or save images to your MediaFire account (if shared with you by someone else) by clicking the button in the right top corner. Also, you can get this basic functionality by right clicking on the image being currently viewed.

We’ve also completely redesign the shared spreadsheet viewer to quickly and easily preview spreadsheet files. The new viewer supports all formulas, formatting and even graphs. Both the document viewer and the spreadsheet viewer are using a much more neutral palette helping you focus on the content you’re working on.

To retain the consistent look throughout the entire website, MediaFire has also redesigned the interface for editing files.

And one more little morsel of exciting news for all those of you who code: MediaFire now has a text and source code viewer and editor! View all text and source code file types, edit them, and share them in a new view specifically designed to emulate the look and feel of a fully featured text and code editor.

We hope this update makes your experience with MediaFire much more pleasant! We would like to thank every member of our MediaFire team who worked hard on this release, let us know how we did!

Stay tuned because there’s a lot more great stuff to come!

It’s the Ping-Pong-a-thon!

February 18th, 2013

The very end of last week was marked at MediaFire with a special event – the Grand Ping-Pong Tournament 2013, or the way many of us refer to it, the Ping-Pong-a-thon. There are quite a lot of avid Ping-Pong players in our team, but the trophies this time went to Erick and Ahmed. Congratulations!

This was a long and heated battle; both contestants demonstrated the highest level, and each gave it their best shot – literally! Everyone here at MediaFire gathered around the Ping-Pong table last Friday to cheer for our two best players, as well as to grab some delicious real Texas BBQ!

A special thanks goes to Jenifer for preparing those original DIY trophies, to Mike for being the referee of the Tournament, and of course to MediaFire for providing us with everything necessary for this event! We all had a great time, and we sure are looking forward to the next Ping-Pong-a-thon!

And here’s everyone who participated in this 2013 Ping-Pong-a-thon (except for Veronica who was the photographer for the event).

Want to become a part of the MediaFire team, and see yourself among these happy faces? Then don’t hesitate to stop by at our jobs page, and apply today!

The MediaFire Android App Has Finally Arrived!

January 18th, 2013

As many of you may already know, on January 16th we officially launched our long-awaited Android App. Almost immediately after publishing our app in Google Play store, we saw lots of warm reviews and great suggestions. We would like to thank you all for the abundant feedback, we appreciate it a lot!

While it makes us happy to know that our users are no longer deprived of MediaFire on their Android devices, the feedback we received also gives us great starting points to focus on improving our apps and adding your most requested features in the near future. As always, feel free to give us more ideas for what you’d like to see in the next version of our iPhone and Android apps in the comments!

Here are some of the great accolades we’re honored to receive from around the web:

“MediaFire is offering 50GB of free cloud storage, so if you’re an avid cloud-sharer, this is an app you don’t want to pass up”.

“No, really: 50 gigabytes”. “MediaFire remains a great option for sharing large files with others, accessing your data across multiple devices, collaborating on documents, and creating backups of non-critical files”.

“…since you have 50GB of free space, you don’t have to make hard decisions of which files you’re uploading to the app for easy access”.

“MediaFire will provide Android users with 50GB of free storage, boasting that users will never have to worry about running out of space”.

“While most other services would only offer that much after a small fee, MediaFire prides itself on leniency, affordability and ease of use, and not having to worry about how many megabytes or gigabytes you have left goes a long way toward a less stressful user experience”.

Again, thanks for all the great feedback! Now that MediaFire for Android has joined our iPhone app and our desktop Express app for Windows, Mac, and Linux, we’re starting to round out our software products and getting ready to take them someplace really exciting.

Stay tuned!

Working with Pictures on MediaFire

January 7th, 2013

MediaFire makes many things easy for you, including working with your pictures. With our image gallery, you can always go through all of your pictures in an eye-friendly size without having to download them first.

There is more than one way to create a gallery. The easiest one is to simply left click on the image file on your “My Files” page, and you will be immediately taken to an image gallery of all the pictures in that folder.

To create a gallery of a few specific images, just select the pictures you want to include in the gallery on your “My Files” page, then right click and select “View Selected”. The images of your choice will appear in the gallery in a new tab or a new window.

Once you’ve created a gallery, you will find 3 viewing modes on the top of the page (see below).

  • Film Strip mode displays the image of your selection in a big size with all other images from that folder appearing on the right side as a film-strip. You can easily jump to other pictures from the same folder just by scrolling down with your mouse. You can also do that by clicking the arrows in the top right corner, or by using keyboard shortcuts (Up/Left key for a previous photo and Down/Right key for next photo).

  • Single Image mode displays only one image per page, however you are still free to switch to other images by using the above mentioned keyboard shortcuts.

In both the Film Strip and Single Image modes it is possible to view images in 3 different sizes – Auto, Original and Full screen, – or zoom in and zoom out as much as you need.

You can also rotate pictures in the gallery by using the circular arrows to the left from the zooming options.

In Full Screen mode, you can navigate the folder images with the Up/Down/Left/Right keys, or the arrows displayed on both sides of the screen, and exit by simply pressing Esc or clicking the “X” in the top right corner.

  • Gallery mode shows all of the pictures from the folder of your selection as thumbnails (you can choose between a small, medium, or a large size). From there you can left click of any image and it will be opened in the default Film Strip mode.

Your images will be opened in Film Strip mode by default, but you can switch to either of the other 2 modes in the upper right corner of the image gallery at any time (see first screenshot).

Apart from image-related functions, the gallery also gives you some basic file functionality. Just right click on the main image or any image from the folder in the film strip on the right side, and you will get the menu that offers you to download, share, rename, describe or delete the image. There are also large Share and Download buttons in the top right corner.

You can also work with multiple images in the gallery. Simply hold the Ctrl key on Windows and Linux, or the Command key on OSX and select every image that you click on. If you have lots of images to work with, it could be helpful to select the images you need using the Shift key: by holding it, you can select all the images below the image where you started up to the image that you next click on the right side of the Gallery in the Film Strip mode. And once you’ve selected all the images you needed, just right click on either of them to download them, share them or delete them (downloading multiple files is available for users with Personal, Professional and Business Accounts).

And finally, you get 2 functions for the entire folder of your choice in the image gallery: to share it or to download it as one file (this last feature is available for Personal, Professional and Business accounts). You’ll find those two options in the bottom right corner in the Film Strip mode, or the top right corner in Gallery mode.

We hope you enjoy working with pictures using MediaFire image gallery just like everything else on MediaFire! Don’t forget to tell us what you think and share this blog post with your friends.

Save Time and Increase Productivity With These Quick MediaFire Tips

December 5th, 2012

Did you ever ask yourself how well you know MediaFire? See for yourself, and tell us in a comment below how well you were prepared!

Keyboard Shortcuts

How many MediaFire keyboard shortcuts do you think there are? 1? 5? Actually, there’s a whole lot of them, 14 in fact.

Let’s start by saying that all the keyboard shortcuts on MediaFire appear in 2 windows: in the image preview window and in the “My Files” window.

In the image preview window, the keys are pretty basic and most of you have probably already used some of them:

    • Ctrl+A – Select All
    • Esc – Select None
    • Up/Left Key – Previous Photo (gallery view only)
    • Down/Right Key – Next Photo (gallery view only)
    • Ctrl with Drag to Select – Select more items
    • Shift with Drag to Select – Select more plus items in between

And here are the keyboard shortcuts from the “My Files” page:

    • U – Opens Uploader
    • N – New Folder
    • Ctrl+A – Select All
    • Esc – Select None
    • Ctrl with Drag to Select – Select more items
    • Shift with Drag to Select – Select more plus items in between
    • Delete – Delete selected (confirmation will appear)
    • Shift + Delete – Delete selected (no confirmation)

Go ahead and try these keys out next time you log in to MediaFire, and maybe you’ll have a completely different experience this time!

FileDrop

If you’re a professional or a business user, you get to enjoy the FileDrop – the simple feature that might appear complicated to many of us at first sight. But use it once, and you’ll never feel confused again.

First of all, you can make a FileDrop from scratch by checking a special box that says “Make this folder a FileDrop” when creating a new folder in My Files, or you can turn any of your existing folders into a FileDrop with a right click (this can be undone at any time).

Once you got your FileDrop folder set up, you can customize it through the actions menu. You get a window that looks like this:

Simple, Free Image and File Hosting at MediaFire

It’s all pretty straightforward, and if you just take a second to read the titles, there should be no problem.

Those who you want to drop files into your FileDrop folder don’t have to be registered on MediaFire. Once they follow the link you give them, they will see a window like this with an upload button:

Simple, Free Image and File Hosting at MediaFire

So say you traveled somewhere with your friends and each of them had their own cameras. Create a FileDrop, give everyone the link, let them upload all their photos there, and once everyone is finished, share the complete “trip report” with those who went with you and their families and friends (as well as your own of course).

Teaching at school or in college? Collect everyone’s assignment the same way, and once the deadline is up, uncheck the FileDrop option so no one can hand in their homework after the due date.

There are also some additional advanced options that could enhance your group productivity, such as allowing descriptions for uploads, receiving email notifications and having single or multiple file uploads. It’s your choice which options you use and how much easier you want to make your life; we only give you the opportunities.

RSS

Don’t forget about the RSS feature, it may come very handy. Give the RSS link to any of your folders to keep your family, friends, coworkers or project group mates updated on any changes.

Sharing all your pictures through MediaFire? Instead of having to tell all your family members and friends you have added something new, just let them subscribe to the folder with all your pictures so they get all the updates right in their Outlook or their browser. Working on a multi-part project? Exchange the subscription links with all the members and keep track of everyone’s progress when each file is added.

Update Feature

Did you ever share a file with someone, but then realize you forgot to update it, yet you don’t want to confuse the other person with different links? Well MediaFire has a solution for that problem with its update feature.

Simply upload the updated file to the folder containing the original file, select both of them, then open the options menu. There you’ll see the “Update File” option which you’ll need to select.

Simple, Free Image and File Hosting at MediaFire

Once you do that, you’ll see a window that looks like this:

Simple, Free Image and File Hosting at MediaFire

Make sure you have the right image replacing the old one (you can swap them any time), and click OK. What you get is an updated file that still has the same URL so you don’t need to give a new link to whomever you have already shared the file with.

Statistics

How often do those of you who are professional and business users refer to your account statistics on MediaFire? In fact, they provide you with complete and accurate information regarding all your files, be that the files that you store now or the ones you stored a while back and that are no longer there. Just go to My Account on top of the page and then choose Statistics on the left side. There you can click on the “View Statistics” button that will generate a chart report for you. You also have the option of printing a report or exporting it in a CSV file.

We hope this was helpful and all of you found out something new and exciting. And don’t forget to leave your comments, questions or suggestions below!

A Texas-Style BBQ Picnic Party in the Park

November 13th, 2012

Hey everyone,

Here at MediaFire we know how to work hard and we love what we do. Every once in a while though, we like to prove that we know how to relax and enjoy ourselves too.

This past weekend the whole MediaFire team got together for a down-home Texas-style barbeque picnic party in the park and we even invited our families to join in the fun. A beautiful park, soccer field, delicious barbeque, music, piñatas, and the perfect fall afternoon.

Did we mention we’re hiring?
