“And still no one is charged with a crime. I guess this means forgery is something we can do and expect only a slap on the wrist. The result is the thieves will be forced to give back a portion of the stolen goods. Oh yes, it seems we've already established the right for financial institutions to sell junk mortgages as though they were of the highest quality. Really bad man.”
“Hoffa was out of line to call any American group SOB's. If he was interested in improving employment levels of Americans in the USA he would protest the hiring of undocumented workers in our country. Since his union is international in scope (his union is composed primarily of international groups--check it out) they won't fight to use US citizens in the USA.”
“The article says "Odd as it might sound, Harbor's huge ears don't necessarily improve his hearing -- instead they boost his sense of smell." It should have been pointed out in the article that due to Harbor's large nose he has superb hearing.”
“NASA is finally wising up. The article says "Despite all the exploration, scientists still don't know everything about the moon." In fact, we probably know very little about our nearest natural space station we call the moon. You've squandered a lot of time and effort over the last 35 or so years in small capsules going round and round and round the earth when you could have been spending our resources much better using the moon as a space station laboratory. Thankfully this shuttle program is ending and we can put our efforts to better and more interesting scientific use.”
“Has there ever been a better argument for a national sales tax and elimination of all other taxes? How 'bout 14%? No deductions. Tax accountants, please don't reply.”
“Sales tax would only make tax evasion easier and far more reaching than it is now. For instance, in California, where I live it's 8.75%. A short drive away it's 7.375%, and a tad farther it's 7.25%. If I were to make a big purchase like a TV, I could save 1.5% just going outside my county. Of course with your plan, those numbers here would even out. My point is if I were a billionaire with a private jet, would I buy product where the sales tax was 14% or would I wait to purchase something till it coincided with a vacation in a country where the sales tax was lower.
The effects get even worse. How many pairs of $135+ Jordans did Michael Jordan actually have to pay for? Celebrities and rich people get a lot of stuff for free because it's advertising for the company, thereby further reducing their taxes.
If I own a company I could just make my employee discount so great that the tax is negligible.
If you think the black market drug trade is bad, just imagine when everything is being smuggled in to avoid taxes.
We can avoid sales tax all together right now if we purchase online from a company not in our own state. This needs to be fixed regardless of anything else, but it's an example of tax evasion.
“A national sales tax of 14% on everything? That would be a great way to create an even bigger problem of inequality. We have about 10% food insecurity in this country, and the number continues to grow and you are suggesting we should increase the price of food and other necessities by 14% so that the richest of Americans can continue to pay the lowest percentage of their income into the federal tax system since the Great Depression? What we need is a system that creates greater equality either through the tax system or through the wage system in this country. Our levels of inequality are now closer to third world than they are to our first world counterparts. We have the highest rates of childhood poverty of any of the first world countries while we have billionaires paying a 15% effective federal tax rate. What we need is a surtax on exorbitant profits, as FDR stated over 60 years ago our greatest enemy is exorbitant profits at any level - the corporate level or the individual level.”
“"Forever" stamps may have been a bad idea. Big users load up with them and then use them--------forever. If they go back to the old system on this one, they'll probably bring in more revenues.”
“Police shouldn't waste taxpayers money looking for "lost" property. Police should look for "stolen" property. Ever get the feeling this is a rigged advertizing campaign by Apple. If it works again (as it did previously) I would strongly urge General Motors to lose their "prototype" electric car. Due to its' size, it would be easier for the police to find.”
“Who are you going to believe-----politicians and the Chamber of Commerce; or small businessmen and McClatchy News? Of course McClatchy, one of the few good organizations out there reporting what's really happening; without an agenda.”
“The US Chamber of Commerce only represents the big corps. I wish they did not have that name because it gives a bad name to local chambers that actually help the small businesses in their towns.”
“The housing market collapse was the cause of our current economic problems. Housing conditions have not improved at all; and economic recovery will not happen at all until the housing market is fixed. Too many houses are just sitting there or are not being built, denying any income to owners and banks and mortgage companies and construction workers and parts/materials suppliers and builders. It should be government policy to establish a way for every unproductive house to generate some income for the aforementioned. No housing recovery means a 9%-11% unemployment. The other components or the economy are holding their own in view of a depression in the housing industry.”
“Personally, I think the collapse was more of a symptom. The problem goes deeper, perhaps back to the oil crisis of the seventies when the nation first turned away from the economic principles and discipline which had provided modest but steady growth since WWII.”
“One important reason for the diminishing influence of labor unions in the USA over the last 100 years is that the big unions now are essentially international in scope. Earlier they were looking out primarily for the interests of USA labor as American unions.”
“Huntsman sounds like a reasonable guy that might make a good president. The fact that he doesn't always agree with environmentalists' is encouraging. I never voted for a republican but I might consider this team---------da da-------------Huntsman for pres.and Bloomberg for V. P. what do you think? They may be disqualified because they are too successful.”
“Hmm...interesting take. Whenever I was on vacation and I had to back on a certain day, that never meant the next day because it wasn't convenient for me. No doubt many people would lose their job for insisting on not coming back to work until the following day.”
“The great majority of people and scientists believe the earth is going through a warming period, one of many the earth has gone through since the beginning. When it warms, the icecaps melt and the ocean rises (as it apparently is); when it cools the ocean goes down. To say that we must stop global warming is silly; unless the earth should currently be cooling; or unless it is felt the globe is warming too quickly due to our contributions. If it's warming too quickly and we can slow the rate down, let's do it. But to stop global warming is a little much; and naive. I can't imagine that a smart guy like Bill Nye is suggesting we should do something to stop climate change.”
“The very last thing he said is that once you understand what is happening, and that it is indeed happening, then you will feel compelled to do something about it ... which I gather means he hopes people will accept how humans are contributing to the accelerated rate of global warming and will do something to at least slow it down by changing our behavior.”
“Gov. Romney: Let him keep talking and he will assure his defeat in a national election. It may register in Texas, but he is not running for governor. Ask him basic questions about civil rights, oil subsidies, secession, etc and he'll defeat himself.”
“I assume she believes we should continue to rely on the middle east to provide much of our oil. If not, she might chose to protest in front of some middle east embassies.”
“500 sightings/month; 6000 sightings/year and not one clear credible photograph. You're still using that same darned shiny button claiming its a flying UFO (saucer.) Don't you guys ever have a camera ready. I really hope you discover something out there, but a little solid evidence would help.”
“Actually, there are some pretty good photos that go way back before digital cameras. Maybe there's some kind of sci-fi force field or something that obscures them in digital photos? I don't know. But I do know this: a) UFO phenomenon is legit. b) Seeing is believing. I've had two such encounters--with other witnesses. Not. Man. Made......”
“Do you know what aliens, bigfoot, chupacabras and the Loch Ness m0nster have in common? A superpower that disengages the autofocus of every camera in a 1-mile radius... ;)”
