US tire company CEO lashes out at French workers

Posted Feb 21st 2013 1:15PM

Maurice

Maurice Taylor has a sour opinion of French factory workers. The CEO of Titan International, a US-based tire company, recently sent a letter to France's industry minister saying that he had no interest in purchasing the faltering Goodyear Amiens Nord tire plant in the country. According to Bloomberg, the French press got a hold of the letter and now Taylor's comments are out in the open air. The executive, known as "The Grizz" for his bear-like style, threw a few choice gems at country's industry in general, saying, "The French workforce gets paid high wages but works only three hours. They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three and work for three."

Taylor (shown at left) went on to say his company plans to purchase a Chinese or Indian tire company, pay less than one euro per hour and ship every tire France needs, adding, "you can keep your so-called workers." The company manufactures agricultural and other off-road tires.

France, meanwhile, has said it will respond to Taylor's comments, but has yet to do so.

Driver uses "powermove" to stop tailgating... now

Posted Feb 21st 2013 12:45PM

They say that wearing a pink tie is a power move, but so is stopping your car in the middle of an entrance ramp and giving a tailgater a good, old-fashioned stare down. If all that's true, that makes the unidentified man in this video Mr. Powermove.

Although we can't tell exactly what happened before the dashcam started recording, the well-dressed driver apparently felt he was being followed too closely, so he stopped his car in the roadway, calmly got out and gave our dashcam-wielding driver a stare that will probably help him or her avoid tailgating in the future. Now there are plenty of methods get someone to stop tailgating you, but this could be one of the gutsiest moves we've even seen.

We wouldn't exactly recommend pulling this move (unless you plan on getting run over or provoking a fight), but you can see what transpires in the video below.

2013 Honda Civic

Lather, Rinse, Repeat

2013 Honda Civic EX - front three-quarter sunset shot

On some level, it's hard to blame Honda for the strategy it took with its new-for-2012 Civic. Executives looked at the key players on the market as the model was being developed, soaked in the growing global economic malaise, and decided that if they wanted to make decent money on their small car, they'd have to find creative ways to take cost out of its build. In light of the financial crisis, consumers and critics would surely understand some belt-tightening in order to secure the company's legendary reliability, resale value and ease-of-use, right?

So Honda took a pass on expensive new technology – more complex transmissions, forced induction, active aero, and so on. And it also substituted in some cheaper interior materials, skimped on sound deadening, creature comforts and found lots of little ways to save money. Surely in a segment where the frankly ancient and moth-eaten Toyota Corolla has consistently ranked among the sales leaders, nobody would care, eh?

Well, Honda was half right. After an unusually long product cycle with the eighth-generation Civic, loyal customers were all too eager to plunk down their hard-earned cash for a new model, with 2012 sales totaling well over 300,000 units. But the model's long-term prospects were less certain. That's because Honda miscalculated the strategies of its rivals, playing things close to the vest when others chose to double-down in the segment.

Between the time the 2012 Civic's design was locked in and the moment it hit the market, the compact car fray became exponentially more competitive. Ford took the wraps off of its sophisticated and tech-rich Focus. Hyundai rolled out its audaciously styled and value-laden Elantra. Mazda took its already great-driving Mazda3 and elevated its fuel economy with Skyactiv engineering. Even perennial small car backmarker General Motors put forth a high-quality effort with its mature new Chevrolet Cruze. Critics' reaction was no less swift and stern: Not only was the 2012 Civic a galactic comedown in terms of interior appointments and design, it wasn't as much fun to drive as its predecessor, nor was it the least bit innovative. For a company that made its nut – and its reputation – on the back of its engineering prowess, all of this was bitterly disappointing.

We're not sure whether it was enduring the media drubbing (that Consumer Reports fall-from-grace had to sting), looking around at its suddenly fierce competition, fielding embittered calls from its dealers or just a simple bit of soul searching that spurred Honda to react so quickly, but here we are, just one model year later and there's a surprisingly comprehensive update on sale. But is it an impressive about-face for Honda or just a bit of apple-polishing and slight-of-hand? We spent a week with a loaded EX-L to find out.

Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva

Volkswagen XL1 production car - front three-quarter view

After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.

As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.

XL1 power comes from a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW (27 hp) electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 100 mph.

There's still no word as to how many examples of the XL1 Volkswagen plans to build, nor how much the company intends to charge for each. The press release does mention that the car will be constructed using "handcrafting-like production methods" though, so we're guessing that it won't be cheap or ubiquitous – not by a long shot. Early rumors had a six-figure price tag attached, suggesting the XL1 be viewed as more of a green halo supercar for VW than a volume proposition.

Scroll down to read a bit more about the Volkswagen XL1 in the attached press release and be sure to check back for our Geneva coverage of the car.

GM won't sell 2014 Chevrolet SS in Canada

Posted Feb 21st 2013 11:01AM

2014 Chevrolet SS - front three-quarter view

Allow us to be the first to extend our condolences to our friends to the north. General Motors has announced the 2014 Chevrolet SS will not be available in Canada. The Globe and Mail reports the automaker has confirmed the high-performance sedan won't hit Canadian dealers, though GM hasn't offered up any reasoning as to why that is.

Buyers here in the US of A, meanwhile, can look forward to getting their hands on the 415-horspower, rear-wheel drive SS by late summer. Something tells us it won't be long after that before Canadian officials start seeing individually imported 6.2-liter V8 four-doors in their neighborhoods. Fortunately, Canadian buyers will still be able to take home the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. The C7 bowed at the Canadian International Auto Show last week, reportedly drawing sizable crowds and interest.

2013 Nissan Leaf gets 75-mile range (actually 84) in new EPA test

Posted Feb 21st 2013 10:15AM

2013 Nissan Leaf - front three-quarter view, charcoal gray

Numbers may not lie, but they sure do get confusing at times. Today's example, the estimated updated energy efficiency numbers for the just-released 2013 Nissan Leaf. The 2012 Leaf was rated at 99 MPGe combined, 106 city and 92 highway with a 73-mile range. The 2013 model gets 130 in the city, 102 on the highway and has a 75 mile range. Sounds like quite the improvement, right?

The issue is that the EPA has a new testing methodology for plug-in vehicles, and
Travis Parman, director of corporate communications for Nissan of the Americas, said, "this new EPA testing methodology means this is not an apples-to-apples comparison."

What it all boils down to is that the 2013 Leaf has two charging modes: the default "100-percent Long Distance Mode" that maximizes range and an optional "80-percent Long Life Mode" that Nissan says will optimize long-term battery health. The EPA test, which is being used for the first time on the 2013 Leaf, blends these two modes. Previously, EPA range estimates were always based on 100-percent charges, whether the cars had another charging mode or not.

If the old EPA test (i.e., 100-percent charge) had been used on the 2013 Leaf, Parman said, the result would have been 84 miles. The increase is due to, "refinements made to the MY13 Leaf's regenerative braking system, reduction in vehicle weight and enhanced aerodynamics," Parman wrote. The EPA's estimated, non-blended range estimate for an 80-percent charge is 66 miles. Parman said official EPA numbers should arrive in early March.

Aside from the efficiency changes, the 2013 Leaf was updated in other ways, with Leaf owner help. A light in the charging port, a locking port cover and smaller headrests are just three examples. Oh, and the car is now $6,400 cheaper, too.

Why you need fox or coyote urine if you park at the Denver airport

Posted Feb 21st 2013 9:30AM

Vegetable farmers have long known what visitors to the Denver International Airport are just know discovering: fox urine is incredibly effective at keeping rabbits at bay.

According to Sky News, the long-eared lagomorpha are hopping their way under recently parked cars for warmth. That would be just fine, except the rabbits then turn their sharp teeth onto vehicle electrical systems. The result can be thousands of dollars worth of repairs for travelers who leave their vehicles in long term parking. Local wildlife workers have been removing up to 100 rabbits a month from the airport's parking lots.

Local mechanics, meanwhile, are advising owners to mark their vehicle's wires with fox urine. The solution is available at most outdoor and hunting stores, though we'd say simply spraying the ground around your vehicle sufficient enough to keep the bunnies away. (We're told they have a vicious streak a mile wide.)

Robb Report chooses Porsche 911 as its Car of the Year

Posted Feb 21st 2013 8:45AM

Porsche 911 - yellow - front three-quarter view

Robb Report has picked the seventh-generation Porsche 911 Carrera S as its 2013 Car of the Year, saying the two-door captivated its judges with "agility, driving dynamics and balance." The German coupe bested 12 others who were also in the running – the impressive list of nominees included the BMW M5, Audi S8, Ferrari FF, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse.

Judging involved more than just throwing darts at pictures on the wall, as the publication enlisted a panel of automotive experts to test drive each vehicle for close evaluation. The panelists included 100 members of the Robb Report Club (comprised of top corporate executives and influential readers), Editor-in-Chief Brett Anderson and automotive consultant Robert Ross. Full results of the competition will be revealed in the luxury magazine's March issue, hitting newsstands in about a week. For more information, visit Robb Report online or check out the full press release from Porsche below.

Alfa Romeo 4C will hit top-selling Fiat dealerships first

Posted Feb 21st 2013 8:01AM

When Alfa Romeo makes its triumphant return to the US with the all-new 4C by the end of this year, it appears that some customers could have a hard time getting their hands on one of these sporty little coupes. Automotive News is reporting that not all Fiat dealers will be getting Alfa Romeo franchises, and that allocations of the 4C, at least initially, will be limited to the best-performing dealers.

Fiat plans to ship only 1,000 4C models to the US each year, but it isn't clear how many Fiat dealers will actually sell Alfa Romeos and which will be the first to sell the 4C. Currently, there are 202 Fiat dealers in the US, and that number is expected to increase to 220 by October. A previous stipulation for Fiat dealers to sell the Alfa Romeo brand was the mandatory inclusion of an attached service department, but this requirement is being pushed back until more Alfa Romeo models are on sale in the US, which should happen in 2015.

Volkswagen debuts MkVII-based diesel Golf GTD

Posted Feb 21st 2013 4:00AM

2013 Volkswagen GTD

As Volkswagen prepares for the launch of the seventh-generation Golf, it continues to show off some of the car's different variants. With the standard Golf and the ultra-efficient BlueMotion Concept out of the way, now we're finally starting to see some of the sportier versions planned for the hatchback. Confirmed for a debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen has now given us our first glimpse at the Golf GTD.

Just think of the GTD as a diesel version of the GTI with all the handling and styling upgrades, and then add a torquey engine to the equation. (We had the chance to sample the current GTD over the summer, so click here to read more.) To go with the new body style, VW also gave the GTD a new TDI engine consisting of a similar turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four layout but with an output of 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque – that's an increase of 14 hp and 22 lb-ft over the current GTD. That's a pretty good oomph, but the GTD won't be setting any acceleration records with VW quoting a 0-62 mile per hour time of 7.5 seconds thanks to the car's 3,036-pound curb weight.

The styling of the MkVII Golf lends itself quite well to the more aggressive body kit found on the GTD (and likely matching the GTI). The new front fascia and blacked-out grille give the GTD a sporty look up front, while 17-inch sport wheels, rocker panel extensions and smoked LED taillights finish off the visual changes. The GTD will only be offered in three exterior colors: Tornado Red, Black and Pure White. As expected, the interior gets the plaid seat inserts and flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, but the car also gets stainless steel pedals, a black headliner, ambient cabin lighting and a specific gauge cluster readout.

Aside from saying the GTD will get a "lowered sport suspension," there is word on what specific changes were made, but if that slammed stance is anything to go by, this is going to be one fun car on the track. Volkswagen has yet to say whether or not the 2014 GTD will be sold in the US, but buyers in Germany can get their hands on this car in June with a starting price of 29,350 euros, which will include standard features such as park assist and a touch-screen infotainment system.

Portland's Holiday Customs is your American Chopper antidote

Posted Feb 20th 2013 8:04PM

Holiday Motorcycles Video

We wouldn't blame you if you recoiled from every video about motorcycle builders you saw. After all, American Choppers has effectively conditioned each and every one of us to think stitching together custom bikes involves more drama than your average episode of Jersey Shore. But, as Jared Johnson of Holiday Customs so eloquently illustrates, real life building as all about crafting something that isn't "just a bolt on situation." Even better, the shop focuses on crafting accessible bikes for the masses instead of $25,000 bits of unobtanium. It's clear Johnson wants his bikes to be ridden, not sheltered in someone's forsaken garage.

Sunglasses maker Shwood Eyewear turned its attention to Holiday Customs for the latest in the company's Experiment With Nature video series. The clip succinctly sums up what we love about bikes, wrenching and, fittingly enough, wrenching on bikes. You can check out the video below, and be sure to head over to the Holiday Customs site for daily dose of drool-worthy metal.

Ultralight makes a runway-free gas and go

Ultralight at a fuel station

We will never stop being bitter about the lack of flying cars in our personal lives. It's not that we trust the drivers on the road with us to have yet another axis of travel to concern themselves with, but rather that we've been promised personal flying transportation our entire lives.

One ultralight pilot seems to have taken matters into his own hands, by stopping at a standard fuel station to top off his tanks. After he's finished at the pumps, he simply fires up his engine, taxis to the highway and takes off into the wild blue yonder.

Is the move safe? Probably not, but the path to excellence is often littered with danger. You can watch the whole show in the video below for yourself. As for us, we're going to start shopping for a personal aircraft of our very own.

Tesla delivered 2,650 Model S EVs last year, Musk confident of profit in Q1 and beyond

Posted Feb 20th 2013 6:58PM

tesla model s

All eyes have been on Tesla Motors this past week as it disputed the veracity of an account of a long distance drive by The New York Times reporter John Broder. While it was somewhat amusing to watch NYT counter the original accusation of fakery made by CEO Elon Musk, only to be then publicly slapped with a handful of revelatory vehicle logs, today's release of Tesla's shareholder letter and fourth quarter financial results are certainly more relevant to the company's future. And, if Tesla manages to keep performing as it has these past few months, that future looks bright.

According to the letter, the California automaker ramped up its production to 400 units per week, building a total of 2,750 Model S sedans last quarter, bringing its yearly total to 3,100 vehicles. Of course, building cars is one thing and delivering quite another. The delivery process (in most States) involves buyers meeting with a specialist who explains the intricacies of owning and operating the car. The tricky logistics go some way to explain why Tesla delivered 2,400 units (100 units less than its target) for the quarter and around 2,650 for 2013. The next few months will see that number increase significantly with 4,500 deliveries planned for the 1st quarter of 2013.

"I'm quite certain we will deliver more than 20,000 cars this year."

Continuing at its current production rate, the company expects to build 20,000 all-electric machines in 2013, and CEO Elon Musk said on a conference call with analysts today that those are already sold. "I'm quite certain we will deliver more than 20,000 cars this year," he said, adding that if Tesla shut down all its stores and stopped taking orders, they'd still sell out for 2013. Tesla received an additional 6,000 new reservations in the 4th quarter of 2012, putting its net reservations – discounting deliveries and cancellations – at year end in excess of 15,000. Musk is happy about this, naturally, but is focused on figuring out, "how do we exceed the 20,000 number next year?"

Financially speaking, the numbers also look pretty positive. Tesla's quarterly loss shrunk to $90 million from $110 million in the third quarter, while revenue dramatically increased over 500 percent from the previous quarter to $306 million. That income was derived not only from Model S and a few Roadster sales, but also benefited – to the tune of $12 million – from its work on the Mercedes B-Class EV program and drivetrain shipments for the Toyota RAV4 EV.

"I don't want to be overconfident. I do think we'll be profitable in Q2, and subsequent quarters, too."

Perhaps the most interesting piece of the financial puzzle came in a prediction in the investor letter, and we quote, "... we expect to be slightly profitable (excluding only non-cash option and warrant-related expenses) in Q1 2013." Later, during the call, Musk expanded on that point saying that the only thing that could stop Q1 profitability is a "force majeure" event, like an earthquake. He is "cautiously optimistic" about Q2, but is waiting to see how things develop before he makes as bold a claim as he is with the Q1 prediction saying, "I don't want to be overconfident. I do think we'll be profitable in Q2, and subsequent quarters, too."

You can read the investor letter and financial results for yourselves below. We'll have more from the analyst call, including information on leasing in North America and a snazzy new "awesome red" color for the Model S soon.

BMW 4 Series spied with its future competition

Posted Feb 20th 2013 6:30PM

BMW 4 Series coupe spy shots

BMW showed off its new 4 Series coupe in concept form at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, but it won't be long before we see the production model, evidenced by this modestly camouflaged prototype spotted testing. In case you forgot, the 4 Series serves as the replacement for the two-door versions of the BMW 3 Series, just as the upcoming 2 Series will effectively be the new version of the 1 Series coupe and convertible sold in our market.

This isn't our first glimpse of the 4 Series out testing, and we've even spied its droptop, Gran Coupe and too-hot M4 kin. We don't expect the final design to stray too much from the concept car seen in Detroit, albeit without the normal conceptual goodies like oversized wheels and with the overstyled front fascia toned down a bit. Our spy photographers even caught the 4 Series coupe hanging out with an Audi A5, giving us a good glimpse at how the two cars will stack up in terms of size and design.

It's still unknown exactly what engines will power the car when it comes to production, but since this thing is a derivative of the 3 Series, we expect the usual range of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines to be available, likely in 428i ad 435i guise (though, to be fair, the larger 640i coupe uses a 3.0-liter turbo engine, so there's even the potential for 440i nomenclature to work its way into the mix). We'll have to wait until the car officially bows later this year to know for sure.
