FT Press Cuttings allows you to search and view articles as they appeared in the FT newspaper. You can view articles as digital images from all five regional editions of the paper, send links to colleagues or clients with annotated comments and set up alerts for future articles.

• What do I need to use FT press cuttings?
  • To make full use of the FT press cuttings service you need the following:
  • - A Premium subscription for unlimited access to articles. Registered accounts and Standard subscriptions can view up to 8 FT Press Cuttings and Lex articles in total per 30 days.
  • - A PDF viewer for your browser such as Adobe Reader.
• How do I search for articles in FT press cuttings?
  • To search for articles on the “Search” tab, enter your keyword(s) in the search box and click on the “Search” button. You can search for a single word, such as recession, by typing it into the search box.
  • By default, the search engine only returns articles that contain all the words you enter in the search box.
  • Here are some other search functions you can use in the Search tab:
  • - Use quotation marks to search for an exact phrase, such as “credit crunch”.
  • - Use the OR Boolean operator, such as in united OR continental (OR must be capitalized).
  • - Use parentheses to group terms together, e.g. (global warming) OR (climate change) will find articles that contain “global” and “warming” or “climate” and “change” (or both).
  • - Use the minus sign before words to exclude them from the search, such as “global warming” –bp.
• How can I get fewer or more targeted search results?
  • You can get fewer or more targeted search results by using the search functions highlighted above or by using filters on the “Advanced Search” tab. The filters allow you to:
  • - Specify where search words fall within an article (first paragraph, headline, or byline/author).
  • - Include or exclude words.
  • - Specify a word count, date range (defaulted to current day), section of the paper, edition, and/or region.
• Can I save my search for future use?
  • Yes, you can save your search for future use. You can do this by clicking “Save” once search criteria is entered on the “Search” or “Advanced Search” tabs. A pop-up window will appear so you can give your search a memorable name. When you want to re-run the search, you will find your saved searches on the “Saved searches” tab. Click on the search of your choice, and it will automatically run. You can sign up for up to 50 saved searches and alerts in total.
• Can I be alerted when new articles are published in the newspaper that match my search criteria?
  • Yes, you can be alerted via email when new articles are published in the Financial Times newspaper that match your search criteria. To sign up, you must first set up a saved search by filling in search criteria on either the “Search” or “Advanced Search” tab and clicking on the “Save” button.
  • Now go to the “Saved searches” tab and click on the envelope icon next to the search about which you would like to be alerted. You can then specify email addresses, include a personal message, and select your preferred email format. Alerts will be sent every morning (at approximately 6am London time) with new stories that match the search criteria. You can sign up for up to 50 saved searches and alerts in total.
• How do I view an article as it looked within the full newspaper page?
  • On the search results page, you will see a list of articles matching the search criteria. Below each headline, there are options to view the article as text, article PDF or full page PDF.
  • To view the article as it appeared in the paper, click on “View full page PDF” or “View article PDF”.
• How do I print an article from FT press cuttings?
  • To print the PDF of the article or full page containing the article, do the following:
  • - Windows users right-click on the PDF and select Print from the shortcut menu
  • - Mac users Ctrl-click the PDF and select print from the context menu
  • - To print the article text version, select ‘Print’ from the File drop-down menu in the browser window.
• Can I email link(s) to articles to others?
  • Users can share a link to FT press cuttings articles using the “Email article” tool. To send a link, select the article you would like to share by ticking the “Email” box that appears alongside the article details on the search results page and press the “Send” button. You can then use the tool to enter the email addresses of recipients, amend the subject line, and include a personal message.
  • You can send links to several articles at a time by checking several boxes. The number of selected articles will appear below the search bar next to the “Send” button. Once you have selected the article(s) you wish to share, click the “Send” button found next to where it says “Articles Selected.” Note that users will need to be signed in to view the article.
• Can I email the full text of an article to others?
  • Users can opt to send full text articles to email addresses of individuals (but not group email accounts) using the “Email article” tool. Recipients will need to have an active standard or premium subscription to receive full text articles – all other users will receive a link.
  • To send a full text article, tick the relevant “Email” box on the search results page, and press “Send”. On the “Send article” page, enter the relevant information and select the “Full article text” radio button. Note that the full article text option is not available if multiple articles have been selected.
• Why can’t I view an article?
  • There are a few reasons you may not be able to view an article:
  • - If you are a registered user, you may have used up your allotted 8 free articles per 30 days. Standard subscribers can also view/click on up to 8 FT press cuttings and Lex articles total per 30 days.
  • - It is possible you cannot find an article as it was published prior to the time period FT press cuttings started. The FT press cuttings archive goes back to April 1, 2010. If you think there is an error, you can email presscuttings@ft.com.
  • - Currently full page PDFs are not available for Tabloid articles such as FTfm or How To Spend It.
