It's been a slow stretch of news for hobby gaming as companies prepare to unleash their new game announcements at Gen Con, but one company not holding back is Gary Games. The fourth set in their successful Ascension deckbuilding card game, Immortal Heroes, will premiere at Gen Con. In advance, Gary Games has been releasing a steady stream of card previews on their official Facebook page, and they've done a great job of getting us excited for the new set.

We led things off here on MTV Geek back in early May with a first look at the new "Soul Gem" card type, but now closer to the Immortal Heroes release, we're taking a look at another exclusive card preview. Read on to check out The World Tree, a 7-cost Lifebound Construct that can be an extremely powerful asset in the right hands.

Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule! is a card game that eschews the typical take on fantasy, gruesome orcs and grizzled knights, in favor of more lighthearted characters. Much in the way that Shrek gave families a fantasy movie with cross-generational appeal, Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule! aims to be a satisfying gaming experience for players of all ages, not just the adults who consider gaming their hobby. With Father's Day coming up this weekend, it's time to spotlight a game that dads can play with their geeks-in-training.

As a crowdfunded game, Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule! doesn't exist yet on store shelves, but that's just a matter of time. The project is already well past its Kickstarter funding goal, and is set to be published by Game Salute. The project is still running through the weekend though, so there is still time to hop on board if this preview gives you the urge.

Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule! is a card game that walks a fine line between artistic and competitive design. That doesn't make it a bad game though, just one that is given a boost by its style. Just take a look at some of the card artwork:

It's that time of year again. Magic: The Gathering is about to receive its annual core set upgrade, with Magic 2013 comprising a 294-card mix of new and reprinted content.

Core sets are released each year to tweak the basic strategy of Magic. Some cards return, others do not, and this new mix serves as a base for the year's three-set expansion block. In October, that new block will roll out with the first set Return to Ravnica, bringing back themes from the Ravnica setting last seen in 2005-2006.

Since Standard-format Magic tournaments mandate use of the most recent sets only, it's tempting to read into the tea leaves of early spoiler cards and try to guess what strategies will rule the Pro Tour scene. I would resist that urge with today's card, "Worldfire," which is the best example of a "nuclear option" for any Magic player with their back against the wall.

Meet the new heroes, same as the old heroes. Gary Games has shed some new light on the upcoming card game expansion Ascension: Immortal Heroes, where fan-favorite hero cards from earlier sets will get a second shot at play.

Back when Immortal Heroes was first announced in March, Gary Games also revealed their release strategy for the Ascension property. Each year will see the release of one major set that adds a gameplay twist, followed by one smaller set that complements and expands upon those new mechanics . As such, Immortal Heroes is a smaller set that complements this year's Storm of Souls set, while focusing on the Event and Trophy mechanics of that set.

Early previews of Immortal Heroes hinted at an entirely new type of card: "soul gems," representing some new form of weapon that players can wield during the game. What the heck is a soul gem, you might ask? To help explain things, let's take a look at one of the cards and see.

While Steve Jackson Games continuously releases new Munchkin-branded products, the craze that urged players to "kill the monsters, steal the treasure, stab your buddy" started over 10 years ago with original fantasy-themed set. It's been a whole two years since that line has seen any new cards, but that is all about to change with this month's release of Munchkin 8: Half Horse, Will Travel. Rest easy, Munchkin fans, the pun well has not run dry.

Twisted Metal

Back in the day, during the original PlayStation era, Sony introduced "Twisted Metal," an all-new video game franchise that redefined the car combat genre. By taking insane characters (some literally) and placing them in an over-the-top destruction derby with the grand prize being their hearts deepest most desire, the then unknown David Jaffe and team won the hearts and minds of new PlayStation owners. It's been over 15 years since the franchise's original release, but this February Sony is bringing back Sweet Tooth and some of his demented friends for "Twisted Metal"'s first appearance on the PlayStation 3.

Did you take a look at that first photo?! Go ahead and take another peek. Let that pile of badassery soak in for a second and then ask yourself,"Why am I even reading these words and not scrolling through more photos of Kotobukiya's Archangel Fine Art Statue from their X-Force Series?" It's because you're insane. Obviously.

That's okay "Crazypants", cause Warren Worthington happens to be off his rocker as well. Hit the "more" tab to read all about Archangel's info straight from our friends at Kotobukiya. Don't worry-- there are lots of photos as well.

Well this brief dive into the new game is for all of you guys and girls out there heading into the frosty, atmospheric land of the Nords in Skyrim for the first time: some things to see, some things to do... some things to run away from until you've got an axe powerful enough to hack them into Oblivion.

So throw your copy of the game into your platform of choice (or you PC people, just launch Steam), and let's see what's happening in Skyrim.
