For Justin Timberlake, the fifth time is the charm.

The Suit and Tie singer put on both his host and musician cap as he took the stage at Saturday Night Live for the fifth time on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old is one of the youngest to do so, and played to that honour in his opening monologue.

The Social Network actor won four Primetime Emmys for his previous appearances on Saturday Night Live and judging from the constant shrieks from the audience, continues to be a fan favourite.

'There are so many exciting things about hosting five times,' Justin said.

'You get to see old friends, you get to try new things. You get to inevitably let every down due to incredibly high expectations - thanks Internet,' he quipped.

But as much as he joked, the singer played into those expectations as well - starting the hashtag #JTonSNL on Twitter and Instagram earlier in the week and posting preview snaps from rehearsal days before.

Then he introduced the audience to a little known SNL clique called the 'Five-Timers Club,' which awards its members with a gold card.

'In case you don't know, this is the most exclusive club in New York,' he assured, before providing the audience with a peek inside the club.

He walks off stage to a secret room, where he is instantly given a smoking jacket with the number 5 emblazoned on the chest - and greeted to the tunes of Paul Simon.

The Simon and Garfunkel frontman then introduces Justin to the other members - which included a pipe-smoking Steve Martin, a bartending Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin and Candace Bergen.

'Welcome to the club old boy,' 14-time host Steve Martin jeered. 'I always thought if an 'Nsync member made the five timers club it would be Joey Fatone.'

And when Paul introduced Justin as being able to do everything, Steve scoffed when Justin announced he couldn't play the banjo - which Steve does as part of his band,  the Steep Canyon Rangers.

'Oh, so not everything,' the comedian proudly proclaimed.

Steve then led Justin through the club, sending him off for a drink at the hand of former SNL castmember Dan Aykroyd.

'Danny here is a bartender - it's the best he could do only for hosting once,' Steve said, putting the Blues Brothers actor in his place.

'But he was part of the original cast, that must count for something,' Justin kindly offered.

With a pat on his shoulder, the pretentious Steve Martin laughed off Justin's charming comment.

Danny then handed Justin a Kristen Wigg inspired drink - replete with a wig from her Gilly skits.

Next the pair were off to visit the Hall of Portraits, which featured other multiple time hosts including paintings of five-time host Drew Barrymore and 12-time host John Goodman - and a real life Chevy Chase.

The former castmember who has hosted nine times joked about his generally stand-offish personality, including a jab that he chooses to keep away from Steve Martin.

Justin asked for clarification: 'Are you guys friends or not?'

'Exactly,' Steve piped in.

Strolling in to break-up the tension was server Martin Short, dressed in a red waiter's coat and carrying a tray of hours d'oeuvres.

But before the crew can take a bite, Martin Short sneezes all over the snacks - even getting some smudge on Steve Martin's face.

And then, Justin has a moment of brilliance.

'Oh my God, I just realised I'm standing next to the Three Amigos,' he proclaims to a large cheer from the audience.

He then asks them to do the salute, and as Steve and Chevy scoff at the prospect, Martin Short jumps at the chance to relive his role as Ned Nederlander in the 1980s comedy.

After the awkward moment, into the frame walks Alec Baldwin and a mustached Tom Hanks.

The pair offer to show Justin the ropes, telling him that he should be honoured to be so young - just 31 - and already a member of the prestigious club.

'Unlike us, the young cast has to scrap and claw for the chance to be on the show,' Tom narrates as current castmembers Taran Killam and Bobby Maynihan wrestle in tattered clothes.

'It's all in good fun,' Alec assures a frightened Justin as Bobby delivers a deadly punch.

'I killed my friend,' he weeps as Tom offers him a congratulatory beer.

'I remember when I put on the jacket so long ago,' Alec waxed on. 'I was a different man then. No sudden fits of rage.'

He pauses for Justin's laughter, only to snap at him for laughing at a non-joke.

Cutting the tension was the a female member of the club in the form of fellow five-time host Candace Bergen, making a simple joke about men not leaving the toilet seat down.

'This place is the best! I love being a five-timer,' Justin weighed in, capping off the star-studded skit.

And while the rest of the legends scattered off, Dan Aykroyd and Steve Martin ran backstage to change into costume, reprising their roles as the Wild and Crazy Guys for a Dating Game inspired skit called 'It's a Date' later in the show.

Unable to even act as competition is a shy Bobby Moynihan, who plays a simple architect.

But with 'pipes as smooth as baby butt lotion,' the audience is introduced to Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg as their popular characters from the Lonely Island skits 'D**k in a Box' and 'Motherlover.'

They speak only in slow jams, offering to take their date on a ride in a PT Cruiser and assuring her that women can't get pregnant during the season of Summer.

But the groovy brothers from Czechlovakia are revealed, and all sorts of wild times ensue.

'Your swinging dream dates have finally arrived for you!' Steve Martin yells, shimmying his thin hips.

'Get ready to take a hike, because we're two wild and crazy guys!'

The old timers easily win over the audience - and the heart of the young bachelorette Judy - who pulls the foursome out for a dance as the newly branded 'Four Wild and Crazy Guys.'

This was one of the sweetest and most fun SNLs in decades. It was so great to see Steve, Paul, Dan, Martin, Candice, Tom, Alec and Chevy! The suit and tie dancers were hypnotizing to watch. Justin Timberlake is so talented!

Justin is quite the talented & likeable singer-actor. He's been awesome on previous SNL episodes but last night was disappointing thanks to the poorly written skits he was given. Sorry, the Dating Game skit with Andy and him as late 1980's singers failed to bring on the laughs this time. Overall, just way too much unfunny vulgarity, especially the Roman skit with the pig.

A show that never has been shown in the UK..... imagine writing in a US newspaper about Ant & Decs Saturday night takeaway? .....

Quit watching SNL after many years - Jamie Foxx calling Obama "our Lord and Savior" was horrible but the Djesus UnCrossed skit was beyond the pale.
