She's been busy being a mother to Blue Ivy for the past year but on Sunday Beyoncé posted a snippet of her new music to her website.

The 31-year-old singer released a recording entitled Bow Down / I Been On, along with a picture of herself as a child, with a room full of trophies behind her.

And the lyrics include the lines: 'I know when you were little girls you dreamt of being in my world. Don’t forget it. Respect that. Bow Down b******.'

The three minute, 34 second clip also includes: 'I took my time to live my life but don’t think I’m just his little wife. Don’t get it twisted this is my sh*t.'

British fans might be familiar with some of the music in the second portion of the recording, a snippet of which accompanies the 02 Priority adverts filmed to promote the singer's UK tour dates.

The music is actually sections from two different songs, Bow Down is said to have been produced by Hit-Boy and Beyoncé is said to have worked with Timbaland on I Been On.

While the braggadocious new track addresses her absence from the music industry and asserts her authority as Queen Bee of the charts, the content of the music is already causing controversy and dividing fans - and her fellow musicians.

Keyshia Cole unleashed a Twitter tirade against the star. 'Can't stand when people all self righteous when it's convenient it makes them look good. Lmao! But can still talk s*** when convenient 2 FOH,' she tweeted.

After apparently receiving a backlash from Beyonce's fans, the singer added: 'I done kept it real from the start! #RespectTHAT.'

And the R&B star was far from finished. She went on: 'First "Women need to Stick together" now b****** better Bow. Smh. But it's all G! Chicks stay shooting the s***. But when I speak my mind its a prob. #Well #StayMad'

One listener wrote on Twitter: ‘This song makes no sense, is randomly offensive, and is way out of Beyonce's lane.’

BOW DOWN LYRICS

'I know when you were little girls
You dreamt of being in my world
Don't forget it, don't forget it
Respect that, bow down b******
I took some time to live my life
But don't think I'm just his little wife
Don't get it twisted, get it twisted
This my shit, bow down b******'

Bow down b******, bow bow down b******'
Bow down b******, bow bow down b******'

Another fan tweeted: 'how can u sing at the presidents inauguration then release this disgusting, offensive song @beyonce? I'm genuinely shocked.' (sic)

Other comments included: ‘The new Beyonce song is horrid. Unnecessary swearing, offensive misogynistic referencing of women, and terrible music and vocals. 0/1000.’

And another: ‘So much for female empowerment.’

And Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills who tweeted: 'Is that Beyonce song a joke?'

Plenty of the Destiny's Child star's fans welcomed the new music with one listener writing: 'Sorry I'm not sorry that @beyonce is a trend-setter and doesn't sound like everyone else. It's about changing the game #beyhive.'

But some fans suggested that the singer hadn't gone far enough and if she was a male music artist she wouldn't be on the end of such criticism.

One fan posted: 'Miss me with the "she's so arrogant" mess. Were she a man, this would scarcely be an issue. Beyonce isn't arrogant enough. #BowDown' (sic)

Beyonce is and always will be the less talented one from Destiny's Child. She is a disgrace and SUCKS as a musician! Keep trying too hard and maybe one day you will have talent Mrs. Carter.

I always knew her ass was fake, and just calculating. That song was very trashy, and something a 12 year old girl would make about classmates she don't like. I thought she was 'classier' than that, but apparently NOT.

@Tiffany from Florida...you must be one of those B....chtes that is bowwing down to her. Who the hell is Beyonce first off for me to bow down too. That is fine and all if that is how Beyonce first came out into the scene, but that is not HER and that is not her kind of music and you can not compare that to Rhianna...Rhianna is who she is and not pretending to be hard and cocky all of a sudden, she has always been like that from the time she step onto the music scene...Beyonce came out of MOTHERHOOD and claims to be hardcore all of a sudden...she was always private. Why cant she just be humble...what else does she need???? I mean enjoy your husband and your child for god sake and Kesha Cole is right when she said what she said, now if you want to talk about real.. Kesha is REAL!!!!

It's amazing and at this point, disturbing that Rihanna can be cocky on Hard, Pour It up, Phresh off the Runway, and curse a lot in the last song. Why is she allowed to express herself in such a disgusting way but the next day she is loved????????????????? Her Twitter page is filled with some of the most disgusting, arrogant monolgoue's I've ever seen a celebrity say, but Beyonce can't have ONE "clap back". Yeah that phrase Rihanna loves to throw around when she just cussed out a fan or bullied Ciara for no reason. Beyonce has been harassed about her pregnancy, faith in God, her marriage/CHILD is not real, finally responds in a song (Bow Down/I been on) and all HELL breaks lose. I wonder how you all would react. Step into her shoes for once please. Beyonce is actually too polite. I would've cut ya'll down a loooonnnnngggg time ago. She took a lot of crap for years. Use your brains, you all know this is directed to her peers who have been nasty to her. And she is NOT saying she is God.
