The Kickstarter campaign from photographer Anna Fischer is looking to take cosplay out of the con and into the natural splendor of America.

For Yaya Han, it all started with a character from the mid-90's anime "Maze." "I dressed up as Mill Varna who was this really obnoxious little princess. That was 13 years ago and I think part of the costume was made of felt and I shudder think about it now." Since then, Han has become a fixture at cosplay conventions around the world, crafting her own comic, anime, and video game-themed costumes out of cloth, latex, thermal plastic--you know, the usual. Each year, Whovians descend on Los Angeles for the annual Doctor Who focused convention Gallifrey One. This year's edition, honoring the 50th Anniversary of everyone's favorite Timelord is in full swing, and we have our intrepid photographer Bryan Gateb on the scene snapping pics of some of the best Whovian cosplay we've ever seen. Have a drink with an Ood? Don't mind if I d-ood: Read More...

Some time ago, Ryan from Mad Art Lab wrote an opinion piece condemning "Slave Leia" cosplay:

"There is a well known issue with attracting women into nerd culture. Slave Leia is a symptom and a cause. She and her ilk are ubiquitous in any nerdy gathering. Those wearing slave Leia costumes do other women a disservice. They get a lot of attention largely because they’re mostly naked. This means girls uncomfortable wearing less than their normal undergarments in public may feel both pressure to do so if they want acceptance, or unable to gain attention and acceptance and therefore leave the community." Cowabunga, Dude! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have always been a part of my life. In fact, I can remember always wanting to be Donatello for Halloween when I was younger, though it unfortunately never happened. Thankfully, there are other nerds I out there I can live through vicariously. Like this guy, who made himself a classic Krang (notice only one 'A') costume for TheRPF's 2012 Halloween costume contest. Read More...

Oy. I try to side-step these recurring slugfests over whether some women are "truly" geeks or not (or merely playing "dress up" and a "role" designed to suck hapless fanboys in like the sirens of old) but this is like every day now.

This time it is "Ex Machina" artist Tony Harris who has sounded off on the apparent method of choice for such soundings, Facebook. I'm just going to quote the "PG" stuff:

"I cant remember if Ive said this before, but Im gonna say it anyway. I dont give a crap.I appreciate a pretty Gal as much as the next Hetero Male. Sometimes I even go in for some racy type stuff ( keeping the comments PG for my Ladies sake) but dammit, dammit, dammit I am so sick and tired of the whole COSPLAY-Chiks. I know a few who are actually pretty cool-and BIG Shocker, love and read Comics. So as in all things, they are the exception to the rule. Heres the statement I wanna make, based on THE RULE: "Hey! Quasi-Pretty-NOT-Hot-Girl, you are more pathetic than the REAL Nerds, who YOU secretly think are REALLY PATHETIC." Read More...

We're continually impressed by the costumes people create for their convention outings, but once in awhile we stumble across one that puts all others to shame. Such is the case with this incredible, handmade War Machine cosplay. Not only does the face shield swing open and closed automatically, it's littered with all the (fake) weapons an aspiring hero could ever hope for. Read More...

Halloween may be over, but that's no reason to stop dressing up like your favorite comic book characters. Who needs a holiday? This latest costume hoodie will turn you into the Merc with the Mouth with one simple zip. It won't make you as clever or deadly as Deadpool, but there's no denying you'll look pretty stylish in the red and black. Read More...

Who are the most popular movie characters peeps will be dressing up as this year on Halloween? According to a recent Fandango poll, think "superhero." And Kristen Stewart/Jennifer Lawrence. Read More...

The Letter Of The Day is "S," boys and girls. S, for "Sesame Street". And "sue."

How the online costume company Yandy.com thought they were going to get away with such numbers as "Sexy Big Bird," "Sexy Cookie Monster," and the perennial favorite "Sexy Bert and Ernie" -- and not get at least a "cease and desist" -- was beyond my comprehension. For example, here is "Sexy Bert and Ernie":

It's not just about the metallic bikinis: Some folks pay top dollar to see New York Comic-Con's dreamiest cosplay dudes. From the allure of super heroes to the guilty pleasure vile villains provide, the men of NYCC have not disappointed--just ask the swarms of ladies still under their spell.

Let's speak honestly. Beyond New York Comic-Con's exclusive panels and previews on the season's coolest toys, some ticket-holders brave life and limb to see one thing in particular: women in sexy costumes. Whether NYCC's females are throwin' nods to the classics as Leia or experimenting with the newest video game character-garb, the masses of fans are certainly easier to endure with something nice to look at. During the 2012 Power-Con/ThunderCon, the forces of the Masters of the Universe and the ThunderCats came together for a special weekend in Los Angeles-- and nothing states that fan dedication and love more than cosplay! With smaller numbers than one of the mega shows, like SDCC, Power-Con/ThunderCon still had a fare share of costumed attendees, and the overall quality of the gear being worn was spectacular, just like the great attitudes of all involved! While my scrawny frame doesn't mesh well with furry underwear and shirtless-ness, join me as I take a closer look at a few of the people that managed to pull off the look as my favorite cosplayers from Power-Con/ThunderCon 2012!
