Liam who? Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn officially put their Brit Pop rivalry to bed and make history as they perform together on stage
|
Back in the 1990s Blur and Oasis fans alike would have scoffed at the suggestion Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn would one day choose to share a stage and duet together.
But on Saturday night that's exactly what happened when the former Brit Pop rivals sang their hearts out at London's Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust gig.
And even more eyebrow raising for Oasis fans, Noel sang along to Blur hit Tender as both himself and Damon strummed away on their guitars in unison.
Never thought we'd see that! Damon Albarn of Blur and Noel Gallagher of Oasis make history as they put to bed their two decade long rivalry and perform on stage for the first time at the Teenage Cancer Trust gig on Saturday night
Both rugged bands would threaten each other and the rivalry dominated both bands chart success, with record companies pandering to the division of teenage fans.
But they started to make amends after years of publicly jibing each other in the press earlier this year.
Despite Albarn, 44, saying in 2007 making up with Noel, 45, would be the end of Britpop the pair were happy to give each other a mellow squeeze at the BRIT Awards last month.
What rivalry? Noel joined in with Damon's rendition of Blur track Tender as Paul Weller played drums and his bandmate Graham Coxon was also on guitar
Like old friends: It's on;y recently that the pair made up after being spotted chatting at the Brit Awards last month
In unison: The night marked Damon's 45th birthday and he was even treated to a Happy Birthday rendition by the crowd
It seems Albarn had forgotten Noel Gallagher's famous wish he 'would 'get AIDS and die' and his own 2007 pledge: 'I can't make it up with Noel. Britpop would be over and heaven forbid that we'd ever admit we'd all grown up!'
But that all seemed a distant memory on Saturday when Noel, who curated the Teenage Cancer Trust gig this year, invited his former nemesis and new found friend on stage with him.
Fans were first of all treated to them sharing a stage with fellow Blur star Graham Coxon, before they finally took to the mics and surprised the crowd with the rendition.
What's Liam think of that? Noel looked cosy as he posed in the middle of Blur stars Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon backstage
Cuddling up: Noel Gallagher curated the event and asked Damon to be part of it at the Royal Albert Hall
Rocking out: Jersey Budd and Kasabian also took to the stage to entertain the excited fans for the charity gig
Their turn: Sergio Pizzorno and Tom Meighan of Kasabian seemed equally pleased to be playing their live set
Getting the crowd going: The fans were all on their feet as they sang along to the well known tracks
And to make it even more special Paul Weller was reportedly played the drums during the track.
Damon seemed to love the set as he grinned from ear to ear throughout, even resting his head on Noel's shoulder as they wowed the crowd, while Gallagher giggled at his enthusiasm.
And it was made even more special as it was Damon's 45th birthday.
The smile says it all: Noel was in charge of curating this year's Teenage Cancer Trust events and is obviously a fan of Kasabian
Backstage: The boys all posed backstage before it was their turn to turn up the music on stage
Going bright: Sergio opted for a multi-coloured jacket to stand out on stage even more
The rocker was treated to a rendition of Happy Birthday as they made history with the performance after putting to bed their two decade long feud.
Although they weren't the only bands to rock out at the charity concert.
Kasabian were also on stage treating the fans to their collection of hits, while star fans Anna Friel and boyfriend Rhys Ifans were in attendance watching the on stage action take place.
Date night: Anna Friel and boyfriend Rhys Ifans joined in with the action as they turned up to watch the special show
Ready to rock out: Actress Anna dressed to impress, while Damien Hirst was also at the bash on Saturday evening
