It's a Mad-ge world! Madonna shows her feline side in a cat hat and lets her children run wild during spirited stroll

It was just another ordinary day for the mother of four.

Madonna had some scratching their heads on Saturday when she was seen out and about in chilly New York wearing a cat hat on her head.

The 54-year-old singer's choice of accessories, which was actually a black knit cap embellished with pink ears, nose and whiskers, displayed a certain playfulness.

Madonna's youngest tots David and Mercy, both seven, seemed to be getting in the spirit too.

David and Mercy, who were both dressed in their Kabbalah whites, were bursting with energy that not even a strict disciplinarian like Madonna could contain.

The children danced around the star in excitement as they made their way down the crowded sidewalk.

Mercy, who matched her white frock and white stockings with a green coat and a white flower in her hair, waved her arms while skipping.

David sprinted past wearing a dark dress jacket along with white shirt, white trousers, white trainers and white baseball cap.

The Give Me All Your Luvin' singer didn't quite seem to have a handle on her youngest, and only smirked as they showed off their fancy moves in public.

Not amused: Madonna's elder children, Lourdes and Rocco seemed embarrassed by their siblings' antics and hid behind the passers by

Madonna's other children, Lourdes, 16, and Rocco, 12, lagged a few steps behind, looking like they wanted to be anyplace but there.

Lourdes wore jeans and a black padded jacket, along with a baseball cap in reverse, while Rocco opted for white trousers and white jacket.

Rocco - who admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that his mother was 'very strict' - perhaps knew better to behave himself.

Aside from the festive cap, Madonna's outfit looked quite normal, consisting of black parka, grey-striped jumper, grey leggings, scarf and black boots.

The entertainer hid her eyes behind black shades and kept her gloved hands in the pockets of her coat.

Distracted: Madonna is usually so strict with her children, but perhaps she had other things on her mind this day

Madonna's boyfriend of two years, Brahim Zaibat, was nowhere to be seen.

Then again, the male model recently signed with the prestigious IMG modeling agency and may have been working.

The family seemed to be heading home - to a luxurious townhouse on the Upper East Side, which Madonna bought in 2009 for $32.5 million and has spent additional millions renovating.

The adopted kids of Madge look pretty happy and content, more than can be said for Brangelina's raggle taggle 'rainbow' of kids- Angelina's description not mine. The Brangelina adoptees usually look miserable with all thats been foisted on them.

What nonsense DM prints, about the other children being embarrassed about mercy and David's behaviour. If you can't write a better article, don't write one at all!!!
