Her Sex And The City character usually opts for a personal taxi ride over roughing it on an underground train.

But it seems Sarah Jessica Parker takes a more relaxed attitude to travel than her high-maintenance alter ego Carrie Bradshaw.

The actress, who celebrated her 48th birthday on Monday, is seen here taking a ride on the New York City Subway with her family on her special day.

The star could be seen crammed in with commuters as she sat alongside her husband Matthew Broderick and son James Wilkie on the E line.

But the blonde didn’t seem entirely comfortable as she hid behind dark oversize sunglasses and played with her hair to somewhat shield her highly-recognisable face.

Meanwhile her actor spouse kept his eyes fixated on his mobile even though he probably didn’t have any service available to make calls, send texts or use the internet.

Despite obviously being able to afford more expensive and private travel options, Sarah looked like she knew exactly what she was doing as she marched through the station to either change routes or exit at her final destination.

Her boys followed closely behind as she strutted ahead of them in comfortable boots lined with sheepskin.

The group opted for the quick mode of transport in the trafficked city as they had been visiting Tilda Swinton's sleepy exhibit at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

The four-time Golden Globe winner was spotted heading to the museum in New York's West Village in the afternoon.

Sarah Jessica, clutching a copy of The New Yorker, opted for warmth over style donning a tan hooded puffy coat over ripped blue jeans and fur-lined boots.

Matthew, who turned 51 last Thursday, wore a grey hooded quilted jacket over black trousers.

Parker and her family were eager to see the Scottish Oscar winner's exhibit called The Maybe, which consists of the actress sleeping in a glass box for seven hours a day.

According to People magazine, the Ed Wood actress was seen 'laughing' and 'excitedly chatting with Broderick and two male friends' as Tilda dozed nearby.

A white card adorning a wall near her tank reads: 'Living artist, glass, steel, mattress, pillow, linen, water, and spectacles.'

The eccentric 52-year-old's art installation first debuted in 1995 at London's Serpentine Gallery.

Like Swinton, Sarah Jessica is the mother of twins - three-year-old Marion and Tabitha - who were most likely back at the couple's West Village home with the nanny.

The diminutive funnywoman will next be seen in the romantic comedy Married and Cheating with Eva Longoria.

I can't imagine how frustrating it must be, not to be able to even ride the subway without someone shoving a camera in your face. Always admired SJP and the way she keeps her family to herself.
