Liverpool to offer lifeline to flop Carroll as striker prepares for Anfield return

Andy Carroll could be given the chance to resurrect his Liverpool career if he accepts that he will not be a regular starter.

The England international is currently on loan at West Ham and while they have no obligation to buy him at the end of the season, they would be keen to sign him permanently.

Carroll's former club Newcastle have also registered their interest and one potential outcome would be a swap deal which would see Hatem Ben Arfa move to Anfield.

As it stands, he will return to Liverpool and discussions about his future will begin then between his advisors and the club. If Liverpool cannot find a buyer, Carroll would take his place back in the squad but it is most likely that he will be offloaded.

Newcastle have never hidden the fact they would like to bring Carroll back to Tyneside two-and-a-half years after selling him for a record-breaking £35million.

But, as is the case with West Ham, Newcastle would be unwilling to pay anything close to the £17million Liverpool were looking for when he became available.

If he does remain at Liverpool, Carroll - who cannot play in Sunday's match between the sides at Anfield, due to the terms of his loan - will not be one of the club's front line strikers but if he can accept that, he will be given opportunities.

Carroll has hit form recently, scoring twice against West Brom, but West Ham have looked at other options, most notably Vitesse Arnhem's Wilfried Bony.

Rodgers has significantly reshaped Liverpool's forward line since the 24-year-old left in August and now has options that include Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Stewart Downing and Raheem Sterling.

Carroll only made two brief substitute appearances for Rodgers, totalling 18 minutes, before he was allowed to leave before the end of the transfer window. Fulham were the only side, other than West Ham, to make an enquiry.

No, but I would agree that Carroll can helps us defend at set pieces better. Carroll plays better without pressure, I rather let him develop as a player at West Ham then let sit on the bench at Liverpool wasting his time.

I would recommend that he stays where he can play the most. A football career is not that long and I think that many players who drift into retirement will regret when they find out how few games they've played. It is quite staggering how many decent players are content to sit on the bench week after week. Find a club who likes you and will play you. Your memories are made on the field not getting splinters in your backsides!!

Good striker on his day, I would've thought he would be well into double figure to be honest. But unfortunatley that hasn't happened. For around £10m he's worth a punt, but not for the money Liverpool want. Good luck to him whatever happens.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Joke of a club - 19 TITLES, Cheshire, 4/4/2013 ************** Successful as Ferguson is as a manager I could no doubt furnish at least a half dozen names (except that I don't have the interest) of donkeys that he's paid good money for, in fact didn't he buy one after just watching a DVD of him. ALL managers make mistakes at some stage but I suppose you, yet again, just want to come on here and have a bitter little snipe at LFC.

The way Andy Carroll is built I think he needs regular game time. At the end of Kenny's reign (when he wasn't injured and was playing) we won Liverpool games against Blackburn and Everton - the FA Cup game - and almost turned the Final on its head. He needs game time and he needs to avoid injuries, it's a gamble for BR because he is injury prone. My opinion - for what it's worth - there are things Andy Carroll can't do,but on the flip side, there are certain things ONLY Andy Carroll can do.

There have been so many times this season when, as a Liverpool fan, I have thought Carroll would have been perfect for this game, as finally we have people who are making decent crosses into the box. Admittedly, Andy didn't have the greatest start to his Anfield career, but that is understandable as a young lad with injuries and that 'burden' of a price tag on his head. HOWEVER, I believe that BR really needs to give him a chance... Look what has happened to Downing and Henderson when BR has instilled belief into them. I will never forget how he revitalized the game Vs Chelsea in the FA cup final... As soon as he came on the pitch he terrorized the Chelsea defence... Made JT look like an amateur. This season many teams have been quick to work out our tactics... Who would you rather see come on to change the game: Carroll or Borini? I can't exactly see many defenders shaking in their boots at the thought of marking Borini in a set piece. Come back Sweet Carroll Nine.
