After beating out more than 100,000 hopefuls to be in the top seven no contestant was letting an injury stop them competing in Wednesday night's American Idol.

Contestants Candice Glover and Kree Harrison were both walking wounded on Wednesday night's show.

However, while those battling through the pain, the other singers were in a whole lot of pain, struggling with the demands of rock and roll.

Kree wowed judges with her rendition of Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart.

For the 22-year-old the song had a special place in her heart as she was born in the same hospital as the late singer.

The Tennessee brunette belted out the track wearing a white blouse, tight leather trousers and towering black boots, again showing why she is tipped as a potential winner of the show with a powerful and effortless vocal performance.

But while her song moved the audience, Kree herself tried not to move a muscle.

True performer: 'This is me giving you my all with my pinched nerve. I was hoping you wouldn't be able to tell,' the singer told the judges

Not noticing Randy Jackson was full of praise for the young singer.

'I feel like the show finally started tonight,'  he said. 'That's how you come out and rock the stage. I love seeing this bluesy side of you.

'This girl can sing. She's in it to win it!'

Keith Urban immediately picked up on something being off first questioning the 22-year-old's choice in footwear, before she revealed the real problem.

'I have a pinched nerve,' Kree confessed, before saying she could barely move her arm up and down.

Still impressed: Kree wowed the judges particularly Kieth Urban, who praised her for her professionalism

'This is me giving you my all with my pinched nerve. I was hoping you wouldn't be able to tell.'

'I knew something was going on,' said Keith. 'Ten out of 10 for your professionalism, Kree.'

'Girl, you could have had a pinched nerve, got on my nerve, got on several nerves. That was magnificent Miss Lady,' said Nicki Minaj.

'You're stunning. It's so natural. I think your voice was unmatched, I'm just obsessed with you.

Her performance was only eclipsed by her fellow injured singer Candice.

The 23-year-old, revealed she had a broken toe after pretending the house was on fire as part of an April's Fool joke - clearly it was a bad joke in more ways than one - but the South Carolina native gave a powerhouse performance nonetheless.

'I can feel your pain from here,' Kieth said. 'Your voice is so freaking good.'

Mariah wants to make sure Candice is a winner calling on America to vote for her.

'Every single performance brings a different part of you to the stage,' Mariah said. 'It's mesmerizing to watch you.'

However, shockingly she did not win a fan in Nikki on Wednesday.

The rapper - who wore a sheer paneled blue and white shirt and dress - did not like her song choice:

'What else am I going to say about your voice? I fell asleep with that song too, though.'

Nikki quickly then booed herself - to spare the audience from doing it.

Nikki did heap praise on the girl with the big voice after her duet with Burnell Taylor when they sang The Box Tops hit, The Letter, which was also made famous by Joe Cocker.

'I've run out of words to describe your voice. It pierces through every single thing on this planet. It's like something with a lot of power that you look like with awe. It's pretty awesome.'

Burnell did not fair as well without Candice.

Opening the show, the unique singer struggled to get into his rock 'n roll character and almost fell flat on his face, literally.

The 19-year-old chose to sing Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name.

And he even attempted a scissor kick at the end of his song - but couldn't quite pull it off - narrowly avoid9ing joining the list of injured performers.

'That last kick was almost like a dare, man,' mocked country star Keith.

'I'm going to assume rock n' roll is not your thing. I've never seen you look more uncomfortable in a song.'

'You reminded me of a little Teddy Ruxpin bear today and I just wanted to cuddle you and eat you and squeeze you,' said Nicki.

As all the judges suggest Nikki gave the young performer some advice - 'Make it Burnell.'

The 21-year-old first tried to do his best Freddie Mercury impression when he and Angie Miller, 18, teamed up to sing a duet - Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

But he struggled even forgetting the words at one point.

He redeemed himself a little with his solo spot, singing We Are The Champions, however struggled to deliver the emotion the late Mercury was so good at and once again stumbled over the lyrics.

His singing mate Angie closed the show in a multifaceted performance.

The Maschuttes singer began sitting at the piano and sang the Evanescence hit, Bring Me to Life, showing off her powerful voice.

Showing she has what it takes to be a professional performer the 18-year-old even kept her cool when a wind machine blew her top up, exposing her midriff after she took centre stage.

The song got the biggest cheer of the night from the audience.

One singer that has a fan for life no matter her performance is Amber Holcomb.

The 18-year-old - whose fellow contestants revealed talks to herself all the time - appeared to have a secret admirer in Burnell.

'She talks to herself, a lot,' said Burnell.

'I'm not scared though, she can always talk to me.'

'Amber is beautiful,' he gushed about the singer who performed Heart's What About Love and brought her own twist to the rock song while wearing a gold and black top and leather hot pants and a pair of spiky heels.

It was her outfit that landed herself the most praise.

'I just really don't know where to begin. It was striking. You look striking tonight. The first line of the song out of your mouth completely melted me. You believed what you were singing,' Nicki said. 'This has to be my favourite of the night so far.'

'You look amazing and you sound amazing,' Randy said. 'And I like that you figured you'd come out and give them those legs tonight. You didn't lose Amber in there. Very well done.'

Amber's sister - who is serving in the Army - was in the audience to cheer her on.

'It was just that much easier, seeing her face in the crowd,' she said afterwards.

Also getting points for her look was country star Janelle Arthur - who even lost her outfit to the judges.

While her performance of Billy Joel's You May Be Right  was met with praise from the with the judges, her rhinestone embellished cowboy boots were the real winners.

'I love those boots!' said Keith. '[Bon Jovi rocker] Richie Sambora wants those boots, I promise you.'

Nicki was quick to stake her claim on the boots: 'You're not allowed to critique on fashion, that's my thing.'

'Can I borrow them?' she asked Janelle finding out they were a similar size.

'Those boots are amazing. I'm going to put them in my [fashion] line.'

And when the show returned from the break the country singer had not only been stripped of her boots - as they were already on Nikki's feet - and her gold waist coat which hilariously had been donned by Randy.

'I hope you brought a change of clothes. I think they're going to take your wardrobe by the end of the night,' joked Ryan Seacrest.

'[It's a] perfect fit,' said Randy of the vest.

But always the diva Mariah balked when Ryan tried to drape it on her shoulders.

'No darling, I have my wardrobe,' she told him.

The contestants will learn if they made the rock grade on Thursday night.

Another contest based on popularity instead of talent. Whatever contestant has the most interesting "life story" will win. Soon that person will be basking in relative obscurity along with Clay Aiken and Bo Bice. Blah.

Love Kree. Hope she feels better soon. I also liked Candice. As usual I dont understand they hype with Angie. As far as the Voice. Who cares So what? This is the Voice 4th season and not ONE star has come out of the show . The same with X Factor. Big Deal. American Idol has had more stars than any other show.

Boring, boring, boring...No wonder people are not watching!

Managed only about 10 minutes to the second commercial break before turning over. It was dreadful. Same old jaded formula. Why force a contestant to sing in a genre that doesn't work for them and then have the audacity to critique.... all you end up with is a really crappy amateur show.

Another night of tired songs that are over 30 years old. And they wonder why they are losing younger viewers. Also, does anyone know what Mariah is talking about when she speaks?

Mariah looks amazing! Does this woman age? Seeing her on the show has actually made me realise she is no Diva and she seems really humble and down to earth! Nicki Minaj on the other hand....
