'American Idol': It's an All-Lady Top Five as Lazaro Goes Home

For the first time in "American Idol" history, the top five of the show is all one gender -- in this case, female.

After making it to the top six despite poor reviews by judges, Lazaro Arbos received the lowest number of votes Thursday night (April 11), forcing the 22-year-old Florida native to sing for the judges' save. Despite an adequate "Feeling Good," weeks of negative comments meant the judges weren't having it. "You've been a treasure to the show," Randy Jackson said, "but we're not going to use the save."

Arbos first gained fame on the show for his formidable voice despite a stutter that severely hindered his ability to speak. Though he established himself as an early contender, his star slipped in recent weeks after bouts of forgetting lyrics and judge-panned vocals.

He was joined in the bottom two by Amber Holcomb, who has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the bottom vote-getters ever since her inclusion in the top 10 despite getting rave reviews from the judges, particularly Nicki Minaj.

The all-girl top five is the largest contingent of one gender remaining in the show's history. The previous best occurred during season three, when four ladies (eventual winner Fantasia Barrino, runner-up Diana DeGarmo, Jasmine Trias and LaToya London) were the show's four finalists.

The show is guaranteed to have its first female winner since season six's Jordin Sparks.

Two former "Idol" champions took the stage Thursday night to perform new singles. Scotty McCreery returned to perform "See You Tonight," a straightforward country affair that found the season 10 victor mingling with the audience and seeming to legitimately enjoy his return to the stage. Meanwhile, the original Idol herself, Kelly Clarkson, debuted "People Like Us," a catchy single from her greatest hits album that saw a November release. Clarkson and her band were dressed in glowing outfits recalling the stage setup of Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" tour.
