A panel physician is a doctor or a radiologist who has been appointed by the Australian Government to perform medical examinations on visa applicants who have applied from outside Australia.

Medical examinations conducted overseas are generally only acceptable if conducted by panel physicians. More information is available about the health examination for visa applicants and attending a panel physician.

When do I visit a panel physician?

You should not have your visa medical examination until you have been formally requested to do so by the office processing your visa application.

Do I visit both a panel physician and a radiologist?

In most cases, you should attend a panel physician first and, if an x-ray is required, the panel physician will refer you to a panel radiologist. In some cases, however, you will be advised by the department that only a radiological examination is required for your visa application. In these instances, the department will supply you with a list of panel radiologists.

Referrals
In some countries, you may need a referral from a doctor to make an appointment with a radiologist.
Note: If you are advised that only a radiological examination is required for your visa application, you do not need to attend a panel physician to obtain a referral.

What do I do if my country is not listed?

Where a listing for a country or an area within a country does not appear, you should attend the closest panel physician or contact your case officer for further advice.

Note: With the exception of Jamaica, there are currently no other panel physicians appointed by the Australian Government in the Caribbean. If you live elsewhere in the Caribbean, you may use a Canadian Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP) for your medical examination or referral to their associated radiologist.
