Joining Us

If you are thinking of joining Giving What We Can , then you have our warm welcome. There is one major responsibility involved in joining: you must take our Pledge to Give. That is, you must make a lifelong commitment to give at least 10% of your income to where you think it will do most to eliminate poverty.

This is a serious undertaking, and it will probably shape your life in some way. But there are good reasons to think that it is very effective to pledge (see why here). It is not to be undertaken lightly, but if you think it is the right thing to do and want to commit yourself to a future in which you play a part in eliminating the worst suffering from this world, then we whole-heartedly welcome you on board. If you have any questions about the pledge, you can ask a member for advice by using the chat box at the bottom of the screen.

We think that the best way to give to charity is to commit yourself. You can read more about this here: Committing yourself to charity

The Pledge to Give

I recognise that I can use part of my income to do a significant amount of good in the developing world. Since I can live well enough on a smaller income, I pledge that from today until the day I retire, I shall give at least ten percent of what I earn to whichever organizations can most effectively use it to help people in developing countries. I make this pledge freely, openly, and without regret.

If you decide to join us, then fill out your details below. We will email you further information about joining and post you a membership form containing the list of shared beliefs and our pledge. When you sign and return the form, you will be an official member.

If you’re not sure the standard pledge is right you for you you may wish to consider these alternatives:

  • The Further Pledge A pledge to work out the smallest amount of money that you can realistically live on, and to give away everything above that level.
  • Giving More Tomorrow A pledge to gradually give away more as your income increases with time. Eventually reaching 10%.
  • Trying out Giving A pledge to try giving a small amount for a limited period to see how easy it is.
