Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Friday, May 03, 2013.

A cold front stalled over the Mississippi River Valley on Friday, which brought more active weather to the region. Cooler temperatures along the back side of this system allowed for snow showers persist. But as warmer air moved in from the south, these snow showers turned to freezing rain and rain showers. Ahead of this frontal boundary, heavy rains with showers and thunderstorms developed from the Mid- to Lower Mississippi River Valley. This allowed for flooding concerns to return to the Midwest and most of the Mississippi River Valley and the Lower Ohio River Valley. Mid-day rainfall totals reached over 2 inches in some areas from northern Arkansas through Illinois. Severe thunderstorms with hail and damaging wind gusts have not yet developed with this system on Friday.

Meanwhile, to the southeast, an area of low pressure lingering over Florida continued kicking up heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms, as abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico fed energy into the system. Rainfall totals in these areas reached over 3 inches in many areas. Severe storms have not yet developed in Florida.

Out West, high pressure over the West Coast maintained dangerous fire weather conditions for California and the Desert Southwest. Red Flag warnings have been issued in these areas due to low humidity with hot temperatures and gusty winds.
