HTC M4 brings One style, sensibility downmarket

HTC learned well from Samsung: if there's high demand for your flagship, it will be even more popular among those who can only aspire to acquire it. Thus, the M4 (expect it to ship with some manner of One branding) is supposed to be nearly identical -- in appearance, if not in materials, as you can plainly see -- to its big brother. Besides a cookie-cutter form factor (though smaller, to accommodate just a 4.3-inch, 720p display), the M4 also apparently maintains the same design elements in nearly the same positioning as the One, making the two handsets difficult to differentiate.
M4 reportedly steps down the processing power, to just a dual core CPU, and storage is just 16GB, but RAM is still a healthy 2GB, and the camera also contains HTC's lauded (but somewhat controversial) UltraPixel technology. With less powerful components come less stringent power needs, and in this case, HTC has allegedly opted for a 1700mAh, non-removable battery.
Look for the M4 near the end of the second quarter, we hear, when it should ship in LTE configurations, and with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on board.

fanboys hating on samsung for making identical devices from low, mid and high range, although xperia and lumia devices have been doing the same thing aswell... since now HTC might be doing the same, i wonder what the fanboys will say.

There is a reason why people don't like samsung design language, that is because it has been the same for TWO years, and its quite frankly boring and unexciting with non-premium materials (yes plastic is durable blah blah but looks are more important. and who said metal isnt durable?)
I love the idea of a htc one mini! Because you dont get a midrange sized phone with much appreciation these days, and a 4.3" is definitely a deal breaker for those complaining that android flagships are too big, WITH the premium finish! Tell me the last time you saw a nice 4.3" phone with decent specs! (excluding xiaomi)

2 years? hmm well look at lumia lineup starting from lumia 800 and 900 to 920. Then go look at sonys xperia S all the way to XZ. Then theres your iphone (obvious). Now plz tell me which flagship completely changed their design untill now? From what i noticed, most of those flagship lineup stayed with their design concept, the rectangle design from xperia, slightly curvy and flat from lumia, and we know our iphones... galaxy series were pretty much rectangle from GS1, GS2, then changed to curvy when GS3-GS4 came out... and your saying galaxy lineup is boring and unexciting because its not made out of aluminium? im sure when you ask the 50mill+ S3 users if there phone is ugly, most likely they will say no because people start to love their phone of what it can do, and theres always plastic covers to make it look more pretty and durable.

I'm sorry did I ever say that the Lumia lineup and the xperia lineup made me satisfied? And there are a variety of people who use smartphones in the world, im guessing that only a portion of those actually know the raw power behind their smartphone? You know I talk to most people about smartphones (as I do), and most of them have no idea what is better, they only trust the brand. Most people say ridiculous comments like "I cant trust motorola because of their crappy razr seires in 2006". Goes to show.
And why on earth would you result to cases to make your phone look "pretty"..if the case makes the phone better looking then there are some serious design flaws -.-

Alot of people, when they buy a phone they google it up and do some small research, they will know some info about the power but all they are interested in is the brand, features and camera, and of course the battery to. And thats what the galaxy series have, raw power, best features and 1 of the best camera while keeping a simple but clean design. Showing of a great phone was more popular back in 2005-2010, because not many people owned smartphones back then.
And you said a 'phone case' is only used to make your phone pretty? Plz do a drop test with your phone, 1 with a case and the other without, and plz tell me which one survives?

Two years? Typical Samsung hating bulls**t. The GS3 was a total redesign from the GS2 and the GS3 is only one year old........
Anyone that thinks the GS2 and GS3 have the same design language are the biggest morons ever.

The problem with Samsung's is that their design is not good looking. Not ugly, but nothing special at all, at least for many folks. Apple has a nice design, Lumia is a nice design, Xperias are good too, while Samsung is sticking a boring design with everything. If they come up with an awesome design, then sure, I'll be okay with 20-30 devices that look the same, but not with that nature-inspired pebble garbage.
P.S: No issues with plastic for me.

the battery size is a killer. we're talking Rezound/thunderbolt like battery life here. should've at least been 2000 mah. HTC just keeps stepping all over themselves....

not really... you forget that the iphone manages decent battery life with around 1400mah because of the small 4" screen. ~1700 should be adequate for a 4.3" 720p dual core phone.

it also depends on the operating system too. iOS has less tweaks and no gadgets, and none of the extra tingling things, that's y it can last longer. Android alone already has more stuffs running on the background, then Sense 5 would come with Blinkfeed, another major thing running on the background.

do you know about the sony xperia s? and how horrible that phone's battery life is? 1750 mah and 4.3" 720p display. that was a good phone but bad battery life.
and don't compare battery life to other os coz iphone's battery is not bad.

HTC consistently puts out phones with average to horrible battery life. maybe the HTC One will buck that trend, but as an owner of three of them in the past, I will say this one will be on par with the Thunderbolt, which was horrific.

If it comes with dual-core 1.7ghz krait 300, it might be my next phone. It looks better than any midrange phone currently available and coupled with 2gb of ram(Perfect). The only gripe is the non-removable battery. But its contender Xperia SP is already available in market, so HTC better hurry up to put it on sale.

I don't know if I'm a huge HTC fan, but it is nice to see them cater to a market a lot of people are looking for, that being smaller (4.3 - 4.5inch) devices with adequate ram and reasonable processing power along with HD screens, opposed to the usual qHD or below.
I personally can never use anything below 4.7inches, but having viable options is a beautiful thing.

Not sure diluting the recognition and praise the One is getting by also fielding an "Almost-a-One" is a good move for HTC. I thought that's HTC was going with this marketing strategy. Now ther'll be this One, that One, and that other One over there. Not really the same power as saying, THE ONE anymore.
