Sony halves list of studios developing for PS4

Update: PlayStation firm cuts the number of European devs down from 53 to 30

Sony has significantly reduced the list of developers committed to creating games for the PlayStation 4, removing a number of European studios named last week.

The original list of 53 developers was released shortly after console's official announcement and included big names such as Namco Bandai, Bethesda, Rockstar, Disney and numerous others.

A spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has told Joystiq the initial list was wrong. A number of high-profile studios have been removed, including Mojang, Rovio, City Interactive and Frozenbyte.

However, new studios have also been added to the roster, most notably Deep Silver, Ninja Theory, IO Interactive, Codemasters, 2K Games, Sumo Digital, Bohemia Interactive, and CD Projekt, which confirmed The Witcher 3 is coming to the PS4.

Many of the studios removed from the original list, such as Mojang, 17-Bit and Vlambeer, haven't outright ruled out supporting Sony's next console, and have simply stated they either have nothing currently in development for the console, or haven't decided on anything yet.

There is a possibility that some supporting studios may have wanted their names removed to prevent their projects being announced informally or prematurely.

Update: This report has been updated to reflect a correction in the revised list of European developers supporting the PS4. Confirmed by a Sony representative to be the final and correct list, this list adds Ghost Games ("an EA studio") and reinstates Criterion Games, bringing the total up from the originally reported 28 developers to 30.

    Noooooo. Not Rovio!!!

If I can't play Angry Birds on my PS4 then I don't want one.

The one's that have been removed don't exactly concern me.

Mojang - Minecraft - Only real loss IMO, only for no Minecraft on any PS platform. Yet.
Rovio - Angry Birds - They will sorely be missed.............
Criterion - No loss as it's guaranteed they will be developing for PS4 at some point.
Frozenbyte - Unless I'm mistaken they did Trine 2? *shrugs*

Now if you'd said Platinum and Grasshopper I would've cried my eyes out.

I don't really understand. Are these studios developing exclusive titles for the PS4? The revised list has dropped loads of big names like EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda who will all be developing games which will no doubt be available on the PS4...

    Pretty straight forward really.

They don't want anyone knowing what there working on so asked Sony to remove there names from the list until June, then stick them back on the list after E3  .

Who made Naughty Bear? Hopefully they don't get a dev kit for any next gen console. Not even for Christmas.

Funny how they took Activision and Capcom off when they were at the launch event!
Funnier still they have took Sony off the list! :D

Yep, according to the revised list then even Sony aren't working on it. So either Stonecold is spot on or Sony's wife just left it and took half its s**t.

  16. hephaestos on 25 Feb '13 said:

yeah well the original list here is of 128 studios not 53... so much for this article...

then again, I understand that some studios could be unhappy of Sony dropping their names without reason...

It is a shame to see Bethesda removed from the list. I was hoping they were working on a next gen Fallout. I wonder if they're making FO4 for current-gen. I hope not, that Gamebyro is utter s**te.

If I was SONY I'd send Bethseda packing unless they promised a working version of any playstation game.

Oh yes! I completely forgot about that! Game testing for Bethesda must be the easiest in that profession.

CVG have got it wrong. There was no "original list of 53 developers" - there was a much larger list of developers and publishers, which included a section naming 53 European companies.

You can ignore the fact that the likes of Bethesda, EA, Activision, LucasArts, Capcom, Namco, Square Enix, etc aren't on the "revised list", since they're not European. Ubisoft are missing because for some reason Sony put them under the "North America" section even though they're French (Sony also included Bethesda and EA under the "Japan" section, and have now also included 2K Games in the "European section"... all, of course, being American companies ).

There's actually no overlap at all between the original and "revised list" of European companies, so I wouldn't be surprised if the 28 companies were in fact additions to the original list, bringing the total number of European companies up to 81 - particularly as the original list included such companies as Croteam and Techland.

81 might sound a lot, but bear in mind a lot of these are tiny developers working on cheap stuff for the Playstation Network (or whatever the PS4 equivalent ends up being called) rather than major commercial releases.

The spokesperson is obviously wrong because capcom and square-enix and others arent on the revised list. European spokespersons get everything wrong.

  24. DoucheVader on 25 Feb '13 said:

Likely these will be added back as we get closer to E3. Developers just don't want to show their hand yet, perhaps they need to wait for MS to officially announce support for 3rd party titles.

Can't see it. Codemasters could say they're doing 33 games for the PS4 and that's it. All we'd know is that they're doing 33 games. Why keep that a secret? Next gen is going to be very costly, not forgetting that games will set you back up to £60 defo, plus there's the cost of DLC. New devs will come along, devs will close. I think most devs are holding out to see how gaming goes between the main 3 consoles.

how about comparing the actual EU list with the original EUROPEAN LIST! And not the whole list.

See my post above - there's absolutely no overlap between the original and "revised" European list, suggesting it's not a revision at all, but rather an addendum.

This is a list of 3rd party publishers and developers, and Guerilla Games are owned by Sony making them a 1st party developer.
