'I didn't get Blake Lively a wedding gift': Penn Badgley says he and ex-girlfriend were 'professional' on Gossip Girl set after she married Ryan Reynolds

He split with his actress girlfriend Blake Lively back in 2010 after a two-and-a-half year relationship.

So it would be understandable if Penn Badgley found it a little awkward working with his Gossip Girl co-star for another two years on the hit TV show.

But the 26-year-old actor maintains he and Blake were 'ultimately professional' on set after their September 2010 break-up.

In a new interview with Elle Magazine, Penn discusses what he learned from the end of his relationship with the blonde star, who has since married actor Ryan Reynolds.

'I don’t know if I can distil it into a sentence, or even articulate it,' he muses to the magazine. 'We were very much caught up in the show, which itself was a six-year endurance test.

'Our relationship was a part of that and helped us through it. I mean, like anything valuable, it was good and it was bad and it was a learning experience.'

However, when asked if he had bought a wedding gift for Blake's nuptials to Reynolds last September, he replied in the negative.

'No I didn't,' he said shortly.

Penn played sensitive poet Dan Humphrey, while Blake starred as part girl Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl, which ended in December last year.

With the show affording him heart-throb status, Penn admits he had some 'fun nights' with the ladies in the past. However, Penn says he's more interested in the real thing.

' I learned early on that that stuff is never satisfying in the end,' he revealed. 'There’s a reason the French call the moment of orgasm la petite mort, "the little death." No matter how good the moment was, the moment after is always revealing.'

Penn has been dating Zoe Kravitz - daughter of guitarist Lenny - since 2011 and says he believes in long lasting relationships, despite his parents being divorced.

'I think every person’s parents teach them a lot and also mess them up royally,' he mused. 'I think their separation probably split me down the middle, 50/50. For a while I didn’t believe in marriage.

'But I think I do believe in having a love. I’m not saying only one love ever, but in having a good, solid relationship. I think that’s possible.'
