Free knitting pattern: children's sweater

Well, Mayne Islanders were very lucky. We're still in the light. Unfortunately, our sister island--Pender Island--wasn't that fortunate. Reportedly, their power will be back on at 4 pm.

Pudding Pie


Finished sweater measurements:
Chest:  (22) 26 inches 
(55.88) 66.04 centimeters
Length:  11 inches
27.94 centimeters
Sleeves:  8 inches long
20.32 centimeters

Knitting needles:  6.00 mm/US 10 or size to obtain tension
Yarn:  worsted weight (240) 360 yards
Stitch holder:  four

Gauge:  4 stitches x 7 rows = one inch worked over Stockinette stitch

Stockinette stitch
Row 1:  knit -- to end of row
Row 2:  purl -- to end of row
Repeat rows 1 and 2 for pattern

seed stitch
Row 1:  knit one, purl one--continue to end of row
Row 2:  purl one, knit one--continue to end of row
Repeat rows 1 and 2 for pattern

Back
Cast on (42) 52 stitches
Work in seed stitch for 1 inch (2.54 centimeters)
Work in Stockinette stitch for 10 inches (25.4 centimeters)
Shoulder shaping...
Cast off (5) 10 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows
Place 32 stitches on the stitch holder for collar.
Transfer stitches from stitch holder onto needles
Work in seed stitch for 4 inches (10.16 centimeters)
Cast off loosely

Front
Cast on (42) 52 stitches
Work in seed stitch for 1 inches (2.54 centimeters)
Work in Stockinette stitch for 6 inches (15.24 centimeters)
Yoke 
Work (5) 10 stitches in Stockinette stitch, 32 stitches in seed stitch, (5) 10 stitches in Stockinette stitch for 1 inch (2.54 centimeters)
Upper yoke is worked from two balls
From 1st ball (right side):  Work (5) 10 stitches in Stockinette stitch, 16 stitches in seed stitch for 3 inches (7.62 centimeters)
From 2nd ball (left side):  Work 16 stitches in seed stitch, (5) 10 stitches in Stockinette stitch for 3 inches (7.62 centimeters)
Place 16 stitches from right side on one stitch holder
Place 16 stitches from left side on one stitch holder
Transfer stitches from stitch holder onto needles
Work in seed stitch for 4 inches (10.16 centimeters)
Cast off loosely

Sleeves (make 2)
Cast on (32) 42 stitches
Work in Stockinette stitch for 6 inches (15.24 centimeters)

Pocket

: ) Thanks, Laurie. Inspiration came from my years of experience as an infant care professional. I know how much babies and toddlers love to fill and dump--hence the finger puppet and pocket. A smart knitter could add a string linking the puppet to the pocket.
