'I need sleep': Seth MacFarlane officially bows out of hosting the 2014 Oscars

After incredibly mixed reviews for his performance at the 85th Annual Academy Awards, Seth MacFarlane has officially announced he would not be returning as host for the 2014 show.

'Traumatized critics exhale: I'm unable to do the Oscars again,' the 39-year-old comedy talent wrote Monday on Twitter. 'Tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep.'

'However,' the Family Guy creator continued in the announcement, 'I highly recommend the job, as [Oscar show producers] Zadan and Meron are two of the most talented producers in the business.'

This decision goes along with what MacFarlane wrote on Twitter to one follower just days after his Oscar performance, that there was 'no way' he would agree to be part of the incredibly high-pressure gig again.

The Ted writer and director was widely criticized for the political incorrectness of this year's show, which offended critics found to be sexist and anti-semitic.

However, the aforementioned show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were rumored to be in favor of bringing MacFarlane back to reprise as host, perhaps echoing the mentality of the producers who brought back Ricky Gervais as host, after many were offended by his jokes at the 2011 Golden Globes.

Of course, it's not as if the brazenly funny film and television talent won't be busy in the meantime.

He's still running the three hit animated Fox comedies Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show, as well as writing and directing two films: the sequel to the comedy Ted and a comedic western entitled A Million Ways to Die in the West.

The multi-talented comedic mogul is not the first star to be flummoxed by the pressures of hosting the Oscars.

Actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway, as well as wise-cracking late-night host David Letterman are just a few who have been considered lukewarm in their Oscar-hosting duties, as the three-hour-plus live performance requires someone to be completely unflappable in front of a live television audience of over a billion viewers, as well as most of the entertainment industry heavyweights staring back at them from the crowd.

In the past 25 years, only a select few have hosted the Oscars more than once.

They include Jon Stewart (two times), Steve Martin (three times), Whoopi Goldberg (four times) and, of course, Oscar darling Billy Crystal, as he has hosted the show nine times.

Meanwhile, MacFarlane offered his own insight as to who his successor should be.

'My suggestion for host is Joaquin Phoenix,' he joked.

I am sure it won't be too much of a problem to find another plastic emcee for a plastic award show that heaps praise upon their fellow plastic buddies. Phooey.

If you've seen him on Letterman you know Joaquin can get sidetracked playing roles rather than being himself or being funny.

He can sleep easy - Family Guy is genius and addictive. I'm a huge fan of Sean MacFarlane's plus he is an immense vocal talent. But if presenting's not his forte fair enough - we can't be great at everything. For the Oscars - agree with one reader and think Robert Downey Jnr would be fun. Or perhaps recruit a veteran. Thing is all the big names have either done it before, are too scared to do it or can't, while the the new talent isn't strong enough.
