Like father, like son? Leonardo DiCaprio's long-haired dad George joins him in Cannes for the festival

They share the same thick flowing hair, penchant for facial hair and strong bone structure.

But while Leonardo DiCaprio is a heart-throb who commands millions for his work, his bohemian father George is rather less well known.

George joined his famous son in France as they soaked up the atmosphere of the Cannes Film Festival.

And while the pair are unmistakeably related, it's clear that clean cut Leonardo did not derive all his charm from his long-haired father.

Comic book writer George and his companion were seen emerging from the Eden Roc Hotel in France on Tuesday.

The 69-year-old left his French hotel wearing a black zipper jacket, white button-down shirt, black slacks and black shoes.

He let his long black hair fall on his shoulders and sported a dark goatee and sunglasses.

George was in town to support his successful son during what is inarguably a career high point.

Leonardo's new movie The Great Gatsby, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, screened on Thursday at the 66th rendition of the film festival.

It is just the latest highlight in a career which has seen him win a Golden Globe and become one of Hollywood's most bankable stars with roles in the multiple Oscar-winning film Titanic, Shutter Island, Django Unchained, and The Aviator.

Meanwhile, George is a longtime comic book writer and editor and also a distributor of underground comics.

The writer has been frequently linked to Robert Crumb, the late American Splendor creator Harvey Pekar and the late Dori Seda, best known for her underground work in San Francisco in the 1980s.

He also was a publisher of the underground comics Yama Yama-Ugly Head.

George met Leo's mother, Irmelin, while attending college and they moved to Los Angeles where Leo was born in 1974.

The couple named their son Leonardo because his pregnant mother was looking at a painting by Leonardo da Vinci in an Italian museum when her baby first kicked.

George and Irmelin divorced shortly after their son was born.

Leonardo was raised mostly by his mother, who remarried and held down several jobs, and graduated from John Marshall High School in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles.

@ winniethepooh Very true about the River Phoenix comparison. Basically if you found River attractive you were guaranteed to find Leo good looking too. Very similar look and attitude conveyed in their photos. I don't know if Leo got the roles River would have had though, since both had very different personalities and tastes. They may not have even competed for the same roles. River was really into his music, and may have wound up focusing more on that had he lived. - Dani948 , Somewhere over the Rainbow ___________________ True - and I think the opposite is true as well. I could see Leo in "Little Nikkita", "Running on Empty" or "Sneakers" in River's role ( if he were older at the time, of course). And I could see him in the role Brad Pitt took over for River after he died in "Interview With A Vampire". And River would have done a good job in "Romeo and Juliet". Though I can't picture River in Titanic. Anyway, they remind me of each other.

I like George's retro Pan-Am bag. Reminds of his son impersonating a pilot in CMIYC.
