Friends fans were delirious with excitement at rumours which surfaced last month that a reunion series was on the cards.

And in turn they were disappointed to learn shortly afterwards that it was not, in fact, going to happen.

But the next best thing has arrived as almost a decade since the hit sitcom came to an end, Jennifer Aniston has joined forces with Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry, for a brief but hilarious skit.

Jennifer, who played Rachel Green, gets fans riled up for her Wednesday appearance on The Ellen Show with a new video.

Rewinding time, the 44-year-old actress teamed up with Ellen DeGeneres to bring back fond memories of the beloved programme, releasing a short promotional video clip on Tuesday.

The clip starts with the blonde beauty arriving bright and early to the house of her former co-star Matthew, who played Chandler Bing.

The 43-year-old actor apathetically greets Jennifer and is confused as to why she would be knocking on his door, saying they have barely seen each other since they worked on their hit series.

After mistaking Matthew for David Schwimmer (Ross Geller), Jennifer excitedly explains how she's seeking comedic advice for her appearance on Ellen.

Following a bit of bickering back and forth, Perry offers some words of encouragement, telling the fiancee of Justin Theroux how 'beautiful' she is and how 'great' she will be.

Suddenly, Courteney Cox, who played Matthew's on-screen better half Monica Geller on the show, steps out from inside his home.

Speechless, all three stars awkwardly look around, before getting into a quarrel as it is suggested Courteney and Matthew have been having a Friends reunion of their own kind in the form of an affair.

If that wasn't enough comedy gold, Ellen's wife Portia de Rossi is then seen attempting to sneak out of Perry's house, with the video ending in Ellen herself crawling out of the door.

Ellen, 55, added to the anticipation of the Wanderlust star's arrival, tweeting: 'Tomorrow, my good friend Jennifer Aniston is co-hosting the show and Portia is the guest! It can't get much better than this.'

The TV personality also posted a picture of the two in full preparation mode.

'Jennifer Aniston and I are working on tomorrow's show. She'll be co-hosting with me. With the number of pens we have, you can tell it's going to be funny,' she wrote alongside the silly snapshot.

Having watched the whole show just now including that video clip above with Jennifer, Matthew and Courtney, I literally cringed. It was dire. Jennifer during the rest of the show just comes across as vacuous and obsessed with her appearance. Don't mind Friends. Liked it a lot, very funny. But individually they all suck except for maybe David and Lisa.

Lots of people liked it...but I thought it was childish and no substance....tune in to see what they're wearing and how they do their hair...the hair thing is getting old -she just keeps overprosessing the hair...Friends' acting...sigh, roll eyes, put hands on waist, make duck face, look perplexed, sigh again...cross arms...repeat.....I think they should leave the show be....IMO...Matthew Perry says Jennifer Aniston didn't call him for 8 years; now that she wants something, she called him. Lisa Kudrow was really good....okay show, but not a classic type series..If they do the reunion, to all you fans out there - enjoy!

Even as the show got stupid they were ONE of the best assembled cast and I'm so proud they stood together to get the money they deserved. Nobody went off thinking that they were better.

Hahaha very funny! I would love to see a Friends reunion, but the way the series ended did kind of close that chapter so bringing it back may be a mistake. They were all so hilarious on that show though and their characters were all so funny in their own ways.
