Awkward family photos - the Maya Rudolph edition: Bridesmaids star poses for hilarious collection of cringe-inducing snaps with comedian Danny McBride

She's no stranger to playing klutzy comedic characters.

So Bridesmaids star Maya Rudolph no doubt felt right at home when she shot a hilarious collection of pictures showcasing the most awkward - and thankfully fictional - families of them all.

Posing alongside actor Danny McBride - who is famous for his own cringe-inducing redneck pseudonyms - Rudolph smiles cheerily in a mumsy pink cardigan with her hands maternally resting on the shoulders of her equally-knitted out children.

However, as your eyes drift to Eastbound & Down star McBride you see that he is disturbingly sat astride a table with his hands on the rump of an unsuspecting Basset Hound.

The hilarious result is part of a series of six forced fake family images that the pair of comedians were adopted for GQ magazine's June Comedy issue.

In another bizarre photo, Rudolph takes on a hippy style with wild seventies-era curls and a loose bohemian shirt - while her 'husband and son' look like they should be trying out for a Kiss rock reunion by donning black leather studded jackets, spiked hair and layers of gothic make-up.

Saturday Night Live star Maya and the Tropic Thunder funnyman were delighted to throw on hideous matching outfits and frozen smiles for the shoot - and for the opportunity to torture some of their fellow models.

'With the child quotient, we were thinking we'd have to be on our best behavior. But then one of our daughters - cherubic face, 11 years old - started singing along to the filthiest, dirtiest southern rap,' explained the 40-year-old actress, who will soon be seen in The Way, Way Back with Steve Carell and Toni Collette.

'We asked one of the girls in the Christmas picture if she still believed in Santa Claus,' laughed McBride.

'Everyone's facing the camera, and she just whips around and is like: "Do you still believe in God?" Didn't miss a beat,' added Rudolph.

While she is best known as part of the talented cast of sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live after becoming a featured player in 2000, Rudolph won critical acclaim and global fame as long suffering bride-to-be Lillian in Bridesmaids.

The 2011 comedy starred fellow SNL funny girl Kristen Wiig, who after losing her bakery business, her boyfriend and her savings, is tortured by the beautiful and seemingly perfect Rose Byrne as she struggles with the role of maid of honour at her best friend's wedding.

Having started out as a harmless humorous blog in 2009 based on a ridiculous picture that two childhood friends spotted on the wall of one of their family holiday homes, Awkward Family Photos has became an instant Internet sensation and is now a cult online classic.

It now receives million of hits a every day, submissions from around the world, and has spawned a series of books featuring horrifyingly awesome snaps of family bonding and pet encounters.

Maya Rudolph is funny and talented. Now, having got that out of the way, I have to say that Kristen Wiig is an absolutely doll-baby and uber-babe!

To The Greek. US---Maya Rudolph's mother was a great singer, She died when Maya was very young. If Maya does not have her Mom's talent - just maybe her children will inherit it.
