That looks painful! Samuel L Jackson sports bloody bump on set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier

He is renowned for being one of Hollywood's toughest hard men.

And Samuel L Jackson certainly looked the part as he nonchalantly strolled around the set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier with a painful looking bump on his head in Ohio on Wednesday.

He certainly made it look easy as he got ready to film some scenes dressed as S.H.I.E.L.D's indomitable leader Nick Fury.

The 64-year-old certainly looked like a man on a mission as he marched towards the film set to start another day of recording for the 2014 movie.

Pulp Fiction favourite Samuel looked as cool as they come in a black pullover, trouser, boots and sunglasses, not to mention the head injury makeup.

But the latter were soon jettisoned when the time approached for the cameras to start rolling, and was replaced by his character's distinctive eye patch.

While it is hard to imagine anyone else in the role, Samuel has admitted in the past he was shocked when the once white character underwent a dramatic makeover for Marvel's Ultimate universe, which features

He said: 'It was kind of weird. I just happened to be in a comic store, and I picked up the comic because I saw my face.

'And I was like, "'Wait a minute, I'm not sure I remember giving somebody permission to use my image."'

Cheekily, the comic itself addressed this in a panel in which the Ultimates discuss who would portray them in a hypothetical movie, with Fury answering, 'Why, Mister Samuel L. Jackson, of course. That's not even open to debate.'

The stunned actor then approached Marvel, though it wouyld be several years before his first appearance as the character in 2008's Iron Man.

He said: 'They were kind of like, "Yeah, we are planning on making movies, and we do hope you'll be a part of them."'

Luckily comic book geek Samuel soon agreed, and the rest is history.

What is my motivation? Perhaps the overturned truck will have helped explain Samuel's query
