Wonderful coffee, and the owner even took time to explain every step of the process as he made my cup.

One of my favorite places in Baton Rouge. Love the cuts I get from Micah, and love the great space he's made for hanging out before & after. Highly recommended.

George's is quickly becoming one of my favorite lunch spots in Baton Rouge. Sure, it looks like a dive bar, and the ordering system is weird, but the sandwiches and specials are great. Skip the burgers and fries, they're not really that great, and try the fantastic shrimp or catfish po' boy.

Haven't been to George's yet? The ordering system is a little strange. Walk up to the bar and grab a pad, write down your order and your name, and hand it to the person behind the bar. They'll call you up when your food is ready and you can pay then.

I stopped by Capdeville.... Actually, no. I walked past Capdeville 3 times before I found it. A sign on the door would be handy.

Anyways, I stopped by Capdeville for lunch and ordered the black and blue burger with fries. The burger was phenomenal: generously sized without being obscene, perfectly cooked, and nicely topped. The fries we ren't perfect, but they were damn close -- fresh cut, lightly crispy on the outside and salty. Thankfully, I'll be back in NOLA next month, and I look forward to visiting again.

Gourmet Kingdom

My wife and I took her parents to Gourmet Kingdom for the hot pot, but found out the restaurant switched owners a couple of months ago. The new owners came from the well regarded 35 Chinese Restaurant in Cary, and I'm happy to say they made some serious improvements to Gourmet Kingdom.

After some discussion with the waitress, we got a selection of Sizchuan dishes. Everything was excellent, but the standout was the boiled fish in hot sauce. We also tried the Ba Shu tofu, the Salt & Pepper shrimp, and a beef dish and a lamb dish whose names I didn't catch.

If you haven't been to Gourmet Kingdom recently, I highly recommend you check it out. I believe they've shut down the buffet--not that I'll miss it--but the food is amazing.

Rmeals.com

We recently used http://Rmeals.com to get delivery from our favorite Indian restaurant (Spice and Curry, Durham, NC).  This delivery service was TERRIBLE.  We placed our order at 5:30 on a Sat night.  Delivery was guaranteed by 7pm.  It finally arrived at 7:45.  Also, our order had been confused somehow and we received twice as much food as we had ordered.  Not a big deal but we thought we should let Rmeals know in case the driver was still in the area.  After returning our call, they said, we've discussed it, and good news, we won't be charging you for the extra food.  Excuse me?  Don't you mean you'll be refunding our super late, wrong order meal?  They finally agreed to refund our meal.  A week later, we check our credit card statement.  No refund.  What's more is that the charge is *more* than what it said on our receipt!  We just called again, and supposedly the full refund is still "processing".

I should also mention that although the FAQ claim that their is no "extra charge" for their service, there IS a standard delivery fee determined by the restaurant.

In summary, Rmeals took 2 hours and 15 min to deliver an incorrect order, considered charging us extra for the wrong food, overcharged our credit card, and failed to promptly refund our money after agreeing to do so.

Five Points Cafe - CLOSED

Well, Five Points Cafe is open again, and I'm honestly not sure what they were up to these past few months. The menu was pretty basic - 5 sandwiches and a selection of soups. The soups seem tasty enough, but the sandwiches are fairly spartan. My ham and cheese came with tomato and lettuce on rather stale rye bread with a small mountain of chips. Beverages options were pretty limited - coke products or bottled water. Service was haphazard, one of my co-workers had to try several times to pay for his lunch. They've got a good location, but the whole experience needs a lot more work before I'd go back.

My brother and I visited on the recommendation of a friend and really enjoyed ourselves. We went with the Monday supper menu: tuscan kale, bean & egg soup, stout-braised pork w/creamed leeks & grits, brioche w/nectarines & bourbon vanilla. The whole things was paired with a very dark stout.

The food was very good, though not exceptional. The quantity was fairly generous, and between two beers (stout +  british-style bitter) and supper we were both a bit over full.

I can't comment on the evolution of the place, but I very much liked what's there now.

Chubby's Tacos

Chubby's is a bit of an odd place. I has a menu taken straight out of a real-deal taqueria mixed with compostable cups and flatware. It feels like the first wave in a move to bring the taqueria to the masses.

Thankfully, the food is pretty damn good. Tacos were served as you would expect, on homemade corn tortillas with lots of chopped onion and cilantro (flour tortillas are also available). I wasn't a big fan of the pineapple bits in the pastor, but the pollo and carnitas were both quite good. I'm not a big fan or horchata, so I can't comment on it, but I enjoyed the sandia (watermelon) aqua fresca.

Update:

Got to try their breakfast tacos, and they're good, but not great. Tried the chorizo and egg, and bean and egg tacos. Plenty of eggs, and a decent amount of beans/chorizo, but they're a little too plain.

Had the Steak Frites and Arugula Salad, shared a peach crepe and Terrine Chocolat for dessert. The steak was wonderfully cooked -- tender and flavorful. The fries were hot and fresh and not too salty. The salad was nice, but a bit underwhelming. The desserts were good, not great, but the portions were very generous. The crepe in particular would have been far too big for one person.

The location will be nice once the construction in downtown Durham is done. The restaurant was loud, but not obnoxiously so.
