Two can play at that game.

Director J.J Abrams has revealed Alice Eve was not the only actor stripping down on the set of Star Trek: Into The Darkness.

As the sci-fi director faces criticism over the inclusion of a scene featuring an underwear clad Alice in the new film, he released a deleted scene of villain Benedict Cumberbatch naked in the shower.

J.J. showed the cut scene on Conan on Wednesday where an angry looking Benedict - who plays Khan - is shown naked from the waist up, in slow motion, in the shower.

The dramatic scene did not make the final cut of the movie, which Conan O'Brien joked showed the actor 'not enjoying that shower very much'.

'No that is a shower of evil,' the director confirmed.

J.J. showed the scene not as a defense against including the female star in her underwear, he said however.

The director of the blockbuster addressed the criticism that the short scene that features a semi nude Alice was misogynistic.

'She's changing and the idea was, the intent was, it's Kirk who was always a womanising character, so the idea was have a beat like that amidst all this action and adventure, have beat where he looks and looks away,' J.J. told Conan.

But he agreed that the scene did not work the way he had wanted it to.

'I don't think I quite edited the scene the right way.

'To me it was a balance. There was a scene earlier where he is not dressed either so I felt like it was a trade off. But some people felt like it was exploiting her and while she is lovely I can also see their point of view.

'I'm not defending it, but then there’s a picture of Kirk (Chris Pine) who is not wearing all his clothes.'

The film's writer Damon Lindelof has also apologised for the scene, using his Twitter account to explain.

He posted: 'I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely clothed actress.'

Take it off: Alice Eve's underwear scene in Star Trek: Into Darkness was deemed unnecessary by some critics

He continued: 'We also had Kirk shirtless in underpants in both movies, [but I] do not want to make light of something that some construe as mysogenistic.

'What I'm saying is I hear you, I take responsibility and will be more mindful in the future.' (sic)

Whether it is the racy scene or something else Star Trek has been failing to live up to expectations at the box office - however, the bar was set very high.

Into Darkness warped its way to a $70.6 million domestic launch from Friday to Sunday, but the latest voyage of the Starship Enterprise fell short of its predecessor, 2009's ‘Star Trek,’ which opened with $75.2 million.

Who cares who's nude and who's not. There are TONS of nude scenes in all kinds of movies. why are they complaining about this one?

The fact they would cut out this scene is unacceptable, I demand that they put this scene in the movie! and maybe add a few more minutes while they're at it!

It's the usual patriarchal BS. Have a look at your sidebar for more of it at work, DM. Lots of fine male actors at Cannes, yet there were repeated features on half-naked, C-list actresses, celebs and socialites, who had no business being there. Women are mostly scantily clad on a daily basis in your sidebar. Why? Because men are still mostly in control, and they are afraid of the physical competition. I mean have a look at J.J.

I think J.J. should've: 1) shot Alice Eve from the naval up like they did with Chris Pine and 2) kept the Benedict Cumberbatch -- ooooo, I love that name -- shower scene in and 3) thrown in a cameo (dressed or undressed) of Rufus Sewell just because he is my favourite, brilliant actor [who was dumped by Alice and it's her loss, but now he's deliriously happy with non-actress Ami K. and I wish them all the best]. But once again, Hollywood has ignored my suggestions.
