1982/83: Magath thunderbolt downs Juve

Six years of English domination had to end somewhere - and that somewhere was the quarter-finals of the 1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup. The defeat of holders Aston Villa FC was no surprise - they went out to a Juventus FC side featuring six of Italy's FIFA World Cup-winning squad. But Liverpool FC's elimination by Widzew Lódz raised eyebrows as well as roofs back in Poland's football heartland.

Rossi goals
Juventus and Widzew then met in a semi-final notable for Zbigniew Boniek's appearance against his former club, and another Paolo Rossi strike. The Italian side held sway, 4-2 on aggregate, but the goals soon dried up for Azzurri star Rossi. His threat - he had found the target in every round - and that of his team-mates were subsequently nullified in the Athens final by Hamburger SV's master tactician, Ernst Happel.

Magath in charge
With Michel Platini shackled by his marker, the midfield honours went to Felix Magath. The German international had scored in Hamburg's UEFA Cup Winners' Cup win of 1977, and added to that with a stunning drive past Dino Zoff. Forced to chase the game, Juventus could not catch up and Hamburg held on for a victory few begrudged them. After all, Happel's men had come through a difficult draw: from Dynamo Berlin in the first round, via Olympiakos Piraeus FC and FC Dynamo Kyiv, to Real Sociedad in the last four. On top of that, they also retained their 1. Bundesliga crown. Some underdog.
