Jagielka claims only Gerrard has his England place assured for 2014 World Cup

England hopeful Phil Jagielka has claimed that captain Steven Gerrard is the only player ‘nailed on’ for a starting place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup team next year.

Everton defender Jagielka, who hopes to win his 17th cap against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Wednesday before flying off for a glamour match in Brazil next weekend, is one of the leading contenders alongside Joleon Lescott, Phil Jones and Gary Cahill to be long-term replacements for John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, both of whom have retired from international football.

‘There is tough competition in all positions,’ said Jagielka. ‘It’s not just the centre-backs, even the full-backs aren’t guaranteed places these days and I look on that as a positive.

‘The squad probably don’t have as many so-called top-level players as we’ve had in the past, like David Beckham. So it could be any one of 30 players starting in August and at the World Cup. There isn’t really anyone nailed down. Possibly Stevie but he’s getting that bit older and I see him changing his game for England a bit.’

Thanks Ferguson but that was playing for his club with players who he has an understanding with and not with the England team who rarely play like they know each other, plus i doubt we will even get a chance to play the Spanish with the way we are playing and yet to qualify.

andy, Bridport, 27/5/2013 9:28 As he had to help contain the likes of Ronaldinho, Messi, Deco, Xavi, Iniesta, Eto'o for Barca and many world class players for Real Madrid whilst also being a threat going forward.

FergusonAssociation, forgive my ignorance but what has Gerrard winning at Barcelona and Real Madrid got to do with him playing for England? You have got 20 green arrows so maybe you or one of them could tell me please.

England won't be qualifying for Rio so it doesn't matter.

I'm still completely bewildered that at a time when we had Gary Neville, Ferdinand, Terry, Ashley Cole, Beckham, Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard, we won nothing. On paper, we don't have a team that comes anywhere close to a team that consists of those players. Of our young players, only Wilshere looks like he's going to push on and reach that level. Plenty of other good young players, but great? I'm not so sure. Hope I'm wrong though and will never, ever stop supporting them.

We do look pretty abysmal...

I'm not a Liverpool fan far from it ( I'm Newcastle) but i have to say in my opinion Steven Gerrard is the best midfield player i've ever witnessed playing. It's just a shame players have to get older because in his prime no one could touch Stevie G.

Gerrard is in a different league to the rest that's why.
