Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman checked himself in for a detox after allegedly snorting heroin.

The Capote star had problems with substance abuse in the past, but had kicked the habit for 23 years until he had a relapse.

However the 45-year-old has since completed his treatment and is now back in Europe filming a new movie.

According to TMZ, he fell off the wagon more than a year ago, with his problem starting slowly with prescription pills and recently escalating to snorting heroin.

He told the website the latter only lasted around a week and he quickly realised he needed help, so checked into a detox facility on the East Coast.

Philip said he was at the facility for 10 days and checked out last Friday, and credits 'a great group of friends and family' for helping him seek the treatment he needed to get better.

Very sad to hear that. Clean for all those years, and his 3 babies were born to a clean Dad. I'm glad he recognised he needed help and got it. Think of your babies - they don't deserve a drugged-up daddy. I'm sure he's kicking himself for falling back to his old ways.

I didn't think you could snort it. Uma Therman tried it in Pulp Fiction and needed an adrenaline shot to save her life. Then again it was a fictional film with the word fiction in the title so maybe you can. Who knows.....

If anyone gets a pass here it's this guy. Addiction never goes away, it just hibernates until you slip up.

It seems like popular celebrities can do anything and not get criticised. Excellent actor and I'm a fan but what a waster, young family, great career, wealthy and he risks it all to snort heroin. Very selfish from a guy thats almost 50 with a young son, pathetic.
