As Daisy Buchanan, she's the epitome of feminine chic, breezing around New York in pastel chiffon and ruffles.

But Carey Mulligan looked a far cry from her Gatsby role on Thursday as she embraced her inner vamp in a dramatic all-black outfit at the Hugo Boss winter 2013 show in Shanghai.

The 28-year-old made sure that she stood out from the rest of the star-studded crowd as she paired a black bustier with matching trousers and a splash of red lipstick.

Ditching the girlie image, the actress was clearly out to prove how different she is from the frivolous, coquettish character, making sure that she looked as strong and womanly as possible.

She added a sharp-shouldered black jacket over the satin top and a matching back of open-toe high heels, creating a powerful block of colour.

Offset by her porcelain pale complexion, the black looked striking paired with her crop of bleach blonde hair and dark red lips.

She might have spent the last few weeks jetting all over he world to promote Baz Luhrmann's much-talked about film, but it seems that Carey isn't ready to slow down just yet.

A week after the whirlwind of Cannes, the British star was in Asia to support the Hugo Boss catwalk show, joined by the likes of Gerard Butler and Joan Smalls.

And just in case she blended in with the 1000 strong crowd at the, Carey made clearly made sure that her look was as eye-catching as possible.

And it seems that having a break isn't on the cards just yet as she's set to start filming Hold On To Me opposite Robert Pattinson this year, as well as a new adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd.

Speaking about her seeming proclivity toward period pieces, Carey recently told Vogue Australia: 'I’m just really excited by brilliantly written parts. So I guess I have done quite a few that happen to be in different era. But I think they’re just great parts that I’ve been lucky enough to play.'

Love Carey, since seeing her in An Education. Such class and elegance. This is what I want to look up to as a teenage girl, not women plastered in makeup, bursting out of dresses that barely cover their behinds.

I honestly thought Carey was in her late 30's early 40's...wow!

She could do with some more risks with her style. It's getting quite dull.

Love the outfit and the hair but the lipstick isn't right - I think she needs some more colour on her cheeks

She was very good in the Great Gatsby, but di caprio was awful and spoiled the entire film. He can't act. Period.

She was totally miscast as Daisy. Plain and wooden.
