Kurtis J. Wiebe is one of the most prolific writers working under the Image Comics banner. He first sprang onto the scene with "Green Wake" (one of my favorite series of the past few years) and "The Intrepids" and followed those up with "Debris," "Grim Leaper" and "Peter Panzerfaust." At the recent C2E2 in Chicago, Wiebe showed off his latest (with Meg Dejmal and John “Roc” Upchurch), the fantasy/action/comedy series "Rat Queens." Think of "Rat Queens" as a smash-up of early, punky, profane Peter Jackson and later, epic, "LoTR" lord Peter Jackson.

I chatted with Wiebe through email about who these "Rat Queens" are, the inspiration for the series, working in the fantasy genre, and more.

When I started reading Mark Millar and Frank Quitely's latest superhero saga, "Jupiter's Legacy," I couldn't help but groan at the concept of another story about fallen heroes in a world gone wrong. "Watchmen," "Dark Knight Returns," and "Marshal Law" were all published almost 30 years ago, and honestly, not much else has skewered superheroes quite as effectively as those books. Sure, we've had Mark Waid's great combo of "Irredeemable"/"Incorruptible," Garth Ennis' "The Boys," Millar's own "Kick-Ass" and "Superman: Red Son," Grant Morrison's everything, plus countless indie and creator-owned books from a multitude of creators. But there's only one "Watchmen." Is this the best these two influential creators can do, I asked myself? Superheroes who aren't as super as they seem/used to be? But then something happened that made my cynicism taper and my judging judgement machine cool down..."Jupiter's Legacy" #1 turned out to be really, really good.

Man, and I thought the Comic Book Gang Wars were over.

The New York Times reports that the character of "Angela," which was created by Neil Gaiman for the Image comic "Spawn," will appear in the Marvel miniseries "Age Of Ultron" (I'm NOT going to maintain "spoilers" when the publisher purposely chooses to run this stuff in major news sites -- though to be fair, Marvel characterises this not as a "spoiler" per se but as a "bonus"). Wednesday was the first time in a couple weeks that I was back to my regular routine: jumped on the subway after work, walked into my local shop, met my bestie, and then went for our weekly Comics and Beer time. It was a good day. A good Wednesday. But Hera help me, I could NOT get into my comics this week.

I mean, there’s were really solid books out this week. The Ramon Perez issue of Wolverine and the X-Men finally came out and I’d really been looking forward to it. But... I don’t know, call it malaise or ennui or meh-ness. I was half-way through my stack of comics and nothing was really jumping out at me.

And then Nick Fury and Frank Castle broke out of a Vietnamese prison. Read More...

Last month, Rob Liefeld released several pages from his screenplay "iCons" about the birth of Image Comics, along with a few casting suggestions. In adition to Liefeld's pick of Chris Pine to play him, he suggested Geoffrey Arend as Jim Valentino, Joe Mangeniello as Marc Silvestri, Rob Corddry as Erik Larsen, John Cho as Jim Lee, Richard Jenkins as Larry Marder, Tony Sirico as Tom DeFalco, Dabney Coleman as Terry Stewart, and cracked-out "Fighter"-era Christian Bale as Todd McFarlane.

We caught up with McFarlane at the McFarlane Toys booth during Toy Fair to see what he thought of Liefeld's casting choice and whether Bale would make for a good Todd.
