They've been through their fair share of ups and downs as a couple after going through a brief break-up in 2010 and having to cope with the trials and tribulations of a long-distance romance.

But Lewis Hamilton proudly told the world of his love for girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger as the pair toasted their fifth anniversary together over the weekend.

Unlike most mere mortals, a simple celebratory meal out would not suffice, and the couple jetted off to the Italian island of Capri for a romantic weekend in the sunshine.

Posting an adorable snap of the pair stood alongside their super-cute pet pooch Roscoe after appearing to have disembarked a helicopter, Lewis publicly gushed over his love for his stunning girlfriend.

Writing on his Twitter page, Lewis, 28, said: 'Me & my lady celebrated our 5 year Anniversary in Capri, a time I will never forget. I love you babe.'

The couple seemed to be in great spirits as they lapped up their picturesque surroundings, with both the Formula One champion and Nicole, 33, throwing their arms up into the air as they posed for the photograph.

Meanwhile, little Roscoe looked positively adorable as he wore a pair of ear protectors to shelter himself from the sound of the chopper.

Nicole looked typically great in a monochrome striped skater dress, which she teamed with a stylish straw sun hat and shades, while letting her long raven hair flow loosely around her shoulders.

But the British racing champion opted for a more street style for his weekend in the sunshine, teaming a printed T-shirt with baggy jeans, a baseball cap, shades and a crucifix pendant.

Lewis and Nicole began dating in 2007 - aside from a brief split in 2010 - and the X Factor judge has previously said the couple are 'kindred spirits'.

She told British Cosmopolitan magazine: 'Trust and communication are key… Me and Lewis are from similar upbringings, so we share a similar outlook. We’re kindred spirits and hearts - that’s what ultimately connects us.

'Ultimately, you want to be with someone you can be yourself around. My grandma taught me the person you want to be with isn’t going to be Prince Charming - it’s going to be the person you’re going to be able to work on a relationship with.

'It’s always a work in progress, like everything.'

But in spite of the couple appearing to be happier than ever, the Hawaiian born beauty - who primarily resides in Los Angeles, while Lewis is based in Monaco - admitted she 'wouldn't wish a long-distance relationship on anyone'.

She told The Sun: 'Every relationship has its things and you work it out. We made it last for four years so far, so it definitely makes things interesting and challenging.

'I wouldn’t wish a long-distance relationship on anyone, Lewis would say the same. But if it’s worth it, you fight for it. We try to see each other as much as possible.'

Nicole is a great role model for young women - she has a great work ethic, she is loyal to her family and Lewis and she ALWAYS looks immaculate. They make an utterly stunning couple and Lewis needs to pop the question -wouldnt they have beautiful babies together!! Good luck to both of them!
