Russell Brand’s attempts to break the US have suffered a serious setback after his American TV series was cancelled.

Fox TV (FX) axed late night talk show Brand X after the comedian was criticised by viewers for a series of tasteless jokes.

During the three seasons Brand had accused Princess Diana of taking cocaine and mocked Prince Harry.

In an interview he also opened up about his failed marriage to Katy Perry and revealed it was his ego which was to blame for the split.

Brand, 38, admitted that they divorced because he found marriage ‘hard’ and that it was challenging to make her feel important to him.

Brand has been desperately trying to break Hollywood since his career in Britain stalled in 2008 over the Jonathan Ross prank phone calls scandal. He quit his BBC radio show and though he did land the title role in a 2011 remake of the Dudley Moore comedy Arthur, there have been few offers since.

FX chief executive John Landgraf announced that Brand X would be cancelled even though it had been given a shake-up after the first eight episodes aired.

Instead the network will be working on a ‘scripted live-action comedy’ loosely based on Brand’s life instead because it ‘saw more potential and upside in the audience response’, Landgraf said.

In an interview with Esquire magazine, Brand talked about his marriage to Perry which ended in 2011 after just 14 months.

Brand said of marriage: ‘I tried it and I loved it. I really think she’s a lovely beautiful person.

‘It’s just hard isn’t it? She’s got a lot of options, I’ve got a lot of options, so you’ve got to really, really want it.

‘Some of it’s the fame, but I think getting married is… you’ve got a whole other person that you’ve got to make as important as you!’

Brand did however insist that he was monogamous during his time with Perry, 28, in spite of his reputation as a lothario.

He said: ‘When I’m in a relationship I’m diligently monogamous and stick to the principles agreed on within that relationship. You’ve got to, I think.’

Brand added that stand-up comedy was the only thing that left him ‘raw’ and that his stage act was ‘beautiful’.

Ah, the Americans not understanding irony as usual.......- Ikwyaut, Aagdne, 7/6/2013>>>>>>> Ah yes, this old chestnut. Were it not for that pesky "irony magnet", lurking on the bottom of the Atlantic ocean, that erased from our ancestors' genomes the ability to understand such a lofty cognitive concept as irony, we could aspire to understand the sophisticated humor of Mr. Brand.

Russell Brand DID crack America. He has appeared in a number of films which were successful. By his own admission he is not a talented actor. He is a very funny comedian whose ad lib stuff is second to none. He owns a production company in LA and here in the UK. He is about to embark on a UK tour which is selling out and he has other radio shows lined up. Women love him and he is never short of someone to share his bed. He speaks a great deal more sense than the politicians he will be sharing a stage with on QT and his impassioned speech about Amy Winehouse showed his compassion and understanding for others. I do think his career is beginning to wane a little but he will move on and hopefully write another book and move into a career behind the camera although by his own admission he loves to show off so who knows! Yes hes controversial but who wants to be sane and boring the whole time apart from right wing DM readers!

This is the point where i'd say leave the guy alone now because his chickens have come home to roost and they certainly won't leave him alone 'till he faces up to them but he should never have been considered rehabilitated and ready for television/radio when he was so certain media people have a lot to answer for, i say make him listen to the B.A Robertson song Kool in a Kaftan tons of times to fix his head and if he wants to be on telly again he has to sing it word for word first.
