His rugged good looks once earned him the title of Hollywood’s 'sexiest man'.

But rumoured plastic surgery and recent health problems, including a near fatal bout of flu, appeared to have taken their toll.

The veteran star looked frail and every inch his 77 years as he accepted the 'Alpha Male' award at Spike TV's Guy's Choice Awards in Los Angeles at the weekend.

Looking gaunt and with sunken eyes - but with suspiciously few wrinkles - he stood out for all the wrong reasons among the A-List stars.

Many in the audience at the Guy’s Choice awards ceremony appeared shocked by his frail appearance.

He was at the ceremony to be recognised for his work by many of Hollywood leading men, including Mark Wahlberg and Oscar winning director Ben Affleck.

It was a rare public appearance for Reynolds who made his name in the 1970s and 1980s with films like 'Deliverance' and 'Smokey and the Bandit'.

A rumoured facelift and surgery around his eyes drastically altered his appearance as he attempted to retain his looks.

His cosmetic alterations are often on a list of the top ten plastic surgery disasters cited by doctors.

Reynolds admitted to eye surgery, but claimed the his smooth skin was down to his genes.

But in recent years as acting work dwindled to walk on parts in TV shows he has struggled with health issues.

And last year he spent several days in an intensive care unit at a hospital near his home in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Twice-married Reynolds, who has a history of tax troubles, has also faced the added pressure of seeing his home go into foreclosure for failing to pay his mortgage.

At the awards ceremony, organised by US channel Spike TV, Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane won movie of the year for 'Ted'.

Presenters included Jessica Alba, Jake Gyllenhaal, Snoop Dogg Lion, Randy Couture, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Jon Taffer.

Others who were spotted mingling with the crowd were Olivia Wilde and fiance Jason Sudeikis, Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper and Seth MacFarlane among many others.

The 2013 Guys Choice Awards airs Wednesday evening at 9 p.m., ET/PT on Spike TV.

Hey give the man a break. He's 77 years old and he's not the only person to have cosmetic surgery. It's his body and he can do what he wants with it and I'm sure he doesn't give a damn what any one says. He probably looks better than most 77 year old men.

I liked him in The Longest Yard. Too bad he didn't age naturally. Going under the knife doesn't preserve anything.

I just cant believe the comments here. This guy is almost 80. What does everyone expect him to look like. Its a sad inditement that in todays society being older is a reason to be mocked for ones appearance. The one sure thing is that each and everyone of us is going to look old one day, and I am sure none of us wants to be mocked for the way we look then. We have become an image obsessed society but it will all backfire one day on us.

My dad is 85 and looks better and much younger than Burt.... and he has his own hair! Many of these silly people would probably have aged really well if they hadn't had all the surgery..
