NEWBERRY — Sunday alcohol sales will soon be available countywide after Tuesday’s referendum.
County voters gave the go ahead for the sale of all alcohol for on-site consumption on Sundays. The vote will allow beer and wine to be sold at stores in the county.
The Sunday sales referendum won by a vote of 10,093 to 5,444 or 65 percent.
Newberry County Attorney Jay Tothacer said once the vote is certified Thursday that he will send a package containing the results and the question to the S.C. Department of Revenue. The DOR licensing workers will then work to process the information.
Once they have their paper work done, which should take about a week, they will post information on their website stating that local businesses can apply for the license.
At that point, individual stores, bars and restaurants can begin applying for licenses.
Tothacer said it will take about two weeks or so before alcohol can be bought at stores across the county.
In September, residents in the city of Newberry voted to allow on-site sales of alcohol.
With the county vote, sales will include sales at stores in the city where the alcohol can be consumed at places other than where it is bought.
