Carly Rae Jepsen triumphantly took home the Best New Artist statuette at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan in China Saturday.

The 27-year-old singer rocked a metallic purple Didit Hediprasetyo frock and black pumps as she clutched her Lauren Merkin minaudière on the red carpet.

The newly redheaded starlet then changed into a tiny LBD emblazoned with an electric guitar to perform alongside girl-group Momo Kuro the Makuhari Messe.

'Wow Japan. Thank you so much! I won BEST NEW ARTIST VIDEO!!!! So happy! @MTV_Japan #VMAJ,' Carly tweeted to her 7.4 million followers.

The two-time Grammy nominee recently came to the defense of her mentor and fellow Canadian pop star, Justin Bieber, who got booed at the Billboard Music Awards.

'People are constantly, like, "Is Justin OK?" I've not really noticed any of that,' Jepsen told Billboard magazine.

'I feel like Justin's a guy who's working hard every day, and I think the media can sometimes be a little brutal with stuff and over-exaggerate things.

'But I stand by him. I support him. I think he's a good guy, and he's doing the best he can.'

Carly owes much of her overnight success to 20-year-old Justin, who made her the opening act for his Believe Tour and tweeted her Call Me Maybe video to his massive Twitter fan base.

However, the blue-eyed beauty is most smitten with her leading man - musician Matthew Koma - whom she's been linked to since early last year.

The touchy-feely couple landed at Tokyo's Narita airport hand-in-hand.

I don't like her. Don't know why but there's just something about her. Meanwhile scooter Braun and bieber just won't let her of psy's 15mins of fame go and is trying to make them something they are now and none of like them.

Justin is her mentor? Shouldn't it be the other way round? He needs looking after.

I read that as "Justin was her mother"... not that different to be fair.

Timing seems a bit off. Ideally you should get the Best New Artist Award before you've become a has been...

" Hate to say it, but she's a one hit wonder! - Rin, Dublin, Ireland," ... and 1D cannot sing nor write their own songs nor play any instruments. Also, their biggest 'hit' has only sold about 1/3 of CMM and barely outsold 'Good Times' .. so what does that make 1D? A no hit wonder?

Carly can wear a bin bag and will still look cute. As for the 'mentor' thing. I mean ... seriously? The girl wrote her first song, when Bieber was still in nappies. Her career got a lift with the 'Bieber tweet' and he is perhaps part owner of School Boy Records (?) .. but a 'mentor'? .. Far from it. Oh PS Congrats with another Gong :)
