Chapter 2 – “Under the Mountains”

It is now half a Barsoomian year since the end of The Gods of Mars. John Carter and his faithful Woola have started tailing Thurid, Dator of the First Born who seems to be on a midnight mission of evil up the River Iss.  Silently paddling his own boat upriver behind Thurid, Carter watches as the Dator is joined by a party of Holy Therns, led by the Father of Therns himself, Matai Shang. Eavesdropping, Carter learns that Thurid knows of a secret passage into each cell of the Temple of the Sun. Eager for revenge on Carter and Dejah Thoris, Thurid and the Holy Therns proceed up the River Iss and its tributaries toward the secret entrance – with Carter and Woola behind them in hot pursuit . . .

Chapter 1 “On the River Iss”

At the conclusion of The Gods of Mars, we left John Carter at the fiendish Temple of the Sun in which his beloved Dejah Thoris has been imprisoned for a long Martian year. Jailed with Thuvia and Phaidor, both in love with her husband, we last saw her with Phaidor about to plunge a dagger into her heart – and then the smoke of the burning Temple of Issus blotted out the sight of what transpired next. A Martian year must elapse before Carter can learn the fate of his beloved princess of Helium.
