The famous "Footprints in the Sand" is a favorite poem to many.  Make this lovely tote bag to carry your belongings and be reminded of your faith.

What you'll need:

  • 1 large potato
  • Large kitchen knife with straight edge
  • Paring knife
  • White canvas tote bag
  • Large paintbrush
  • Tan acrylic paint
  • Textile medium
  • Black fabric paint tube
  • Gold glitter fabric paint
  • Wax paper
  • Cutting board

How to make it:

  1. Place cutting board on work surface, then place canvas bag onto cutting board.
  2. Insert wax paper inside bag, this protects the back side of the bag from any paint seeping through.
  3. Ask an adult to cut the potato in half lengthwise with a straight-edged kitchen knife.
  4. Use a paring knife to carve into the flesh of the potato creating a stamp shaped like a foot. Do not carve out the toes, they will be added in a later step with a paintbrush. Repeat this step in the other half of the potato, creating the other foot. You should have a left and a right.
  5. Be sure to dry off the potatoes by blotting them on paper towel or a clean kitchen towel.
  6. Mix together two parts tan paint and one part textile medium on a paper plate or palette. Textile medium creates fabric paint from plain acrylic paint so that it will not wash out.
  7. Use the paintbrush to add paint to your potato stamps and create two sets of footprints walking up from the bottom left corner of the bag up toward the upper right-hand corner.
  8. Use the handle end of the paintbrush to dot on toes.
  9. Use the black fabric paint tube to write your own message. We wrote “HE walks with me” in the lower right side of the bag.
  10. Use the paintbrush to add tan color to the bag to create the “sand”. Use a dry brush technique by dragging the paintbrush back and forth across the fabric. Do not touch the footprints but simply paint around them.
  11. Squeeze some gold glitter glue around the left set of footprints and spread it out with a finger.
  12. Lift the cutting board with the bag on top and place in a safe place to dry overnight.

Tips:

  • Use this wonderful tote bag to carry your Bible, Sunday school materials, and anything else that needs a lift.
  • This design would make a great t-shirt! Use a plain white shirt and give as a gift.
  • Mixing textile medium with acrylic craft paints makes fabric paint. Look for textile medium in your local craft supply store in the art supplies aisle.
