How to buy Gun Safes
A gun safe is what you will rely on to securely store all of your firearms and ammunition, and possibly other valuables as well. Choosing the right gun safe is therefore an important decision, but with the various models and features offered by several different manufacturers, it can be a very difficult one to make without proper guidance. The first thing you will want to consider when choosing a gun safe is the type(s) of firearm(s) your safe must accommodate: handguns (pistols) only, long guns (rifles and shotguns), or both. If you are going for a full size rifle safe, then the next thing to consider is the maximum long gun capacity—be sure to keep in mind that your gun collection is likely to grow. Weight is also a large determinant. Given similar external dimensions, heavier safes are more expensive because they are made with thicker steel, but they are also likely to be more fireproof and secure.
When it comes to security, not all gun safes are equal and you'll usually get what you pay for when it comes to break-in prevention. Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a third party rating agency, lists the lock component of gun safes (the lock is often supplied by another manufacturer) and indicates how difficult the safe is to break into by assigning a rating. If theft is a main concern, be sure to invest in a gun safe with a UL RSC (Residential Security Container) rating that features either a Group II combination lock or a Type 1 electronic lock. Such a safe will stop common thieves in their tracks and force the experienced ones to either spend a lot of time trying to crack it or to attempt to remove the safe from the premises. If the safe is very heavy (over 500 lbs) and/or is properly anchored, potential burglars will have an extremely difficult time trying to get the safe out of your home.
Whether your necessities include theft prevention, fire resistance, legal compliance, or simply keeping guns out of your child's reach, it's imperative to pick a gun safe that's right for you. With over 150 Gun Safes to choose from, we can help you find the best one for your needs.

How to Find Gun Safes
Smart Rating
The Smart Rating generates a rating (maximum of 100) by evaluating relevant data from all gun safes and weighing important data fields accordingly. For example, the fire rating and burglary rating are very heavily weighted because these metrics define a quality gun safe. Bolt count carries some weight; it is relevant because a low bolt count can make a safe easier to break into, but it does not indicate as much about security as the burglary rating. The dimensions of the gun safe are insignificant compared to the other data fields, as this factor purely comes down to user preference—there is no objective definition of "better" dimensions.

Hinge Location
Hinges allow the door to be swung open or closed. They are not meant to provide extra security, so the hinge location is mostly a matter of personal preference. Gun safes with external hinges offer the convenience of wide access, as the door swings out a full 180º instead of the 90º offered by a safe with internal hinges. External hinge gun safes can be just as secure as their internal hinge counterparts, provided that there are bolts on the hinged side of the door.

UL Lock Rating
This is an important aspect to consider because the lock is often the weakest part of a gun safe. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) rates locks by how resistant they are to tampering. Group II combination locks and Type 1 electronic locks are the industry standard for gun safes because they are more resistant to manipulation than non-rated locks.
UL Lock Rating :
- Group II, Type 1
Weight
Many gun safes weigh well over 1,000 pounds, so it's important to keep weight in mind when determining where to place the gun safe in your home. Heavier safes are more difficult to steal, but they are also more expensive. If you prefer a lightweight safe, check for the "anchorable" feature because an anchored safe is harder for a burglar to steal.
Facts: | The lightest gun safe in our database is the GunVault MV500-STD, which weighs 5 pounds. The heaviest gun safe in our database is the Amsec HS7943, which weighs 6,840 pounds. |
Special Features
- Door organizer included: The door organizer is a canvas pouch attached to the backside of the safe door. This is a great place to store handguns, ammunition, and tactical attachments.
- Adjustable shelving: Most rifle safes have this feature to allow you to choose between more rifle storage or more shelf space.
- Anchor mounting: This is an important theft deterrent because even a small, lightweight safe can be difficult to steal if it is properly anchored.
- Electrical access hole: This means there is a small opening that allows power to be used in the safe (i.e. for interior lighting).
- Tactical design: While all safes can hold some assault rifles, safes with a tactical design are specially designed to accommodate these space-consuming weapons.
- Biometric scanner: Safes with this feature use a fingerprint scanner to grant access.
- Electronic lock option: This indicates whether a certain model comes with an electronic lock.
- Interior lighting option: Interior lighting comes in handy when you need to see the back of a large safe in a dark room.
- Exterior color options: If matching a gun safe to your home decor is important, select a safe with this feature.
- Portable: These small gun safes weigh 6 pounds or less and are ideal for pistol storage and transport in a vehicle.
Special Features :
- Door Organizer Included, Adjustable Shelving, Anchor Mounting, Electrical Access Hole, Tactical Design, Biometric Scanner, Electronic Lock Option, Interior Lighting Option, Exterior Color Options, Portable, 4-in-1 Flex Interior, Dehumidifier, Jewelry Drawer, Outlet Kit, Velour Fabric Interior
Standard Lock Type
A mechanical combination lock (dial access) is generally cheaper and more reliable in the long run than an electronic lock (keypad access), but if quick access is important, you should go with an electronic lock. Stand-alone key locks are offered on only the most basic gun safes and should not be viewed as a theft deterrent.
Standard Lock Type :
- Combination, Electronic, Key

Fact: The least expensive gun safe in our database is the GunVault Nanovault 100, which has an estimated cost of $30.
Fire Rating
The higher the fireproof rating, the better the safe. Manufacturers rate gun safes by how long they can keep their contents safe during a house fire that burns at 1200º F or hotter.
Fact: The gun safe with the highest fire rating in our database is the Liberty Presidential 25, which can survive a house fire that lasts up to 150 minutes.
Long Gun Capacity
The long gun capacity refers to the maximum number of unequipped rifles/shotguns the safe can hold. This figure includes rifles that can be stored on racks in the interior of the safe as well as on the backside of the door. Note that a rifle safe with a stated long gun capacity of 40 can only accommodate about 20 hunting rifles with scopes or assault rifles with tactical attachments (optics, pistol grips, flashlights, suppressors, etc).
Fact: The gun safe with the largest rifle capacity in our database is the Cannon A54, which can hold a maximum of 80 long guns.
UL Burglary Rating
The Underwriters Laboratories (UL) classifies gun safes by how resistant they are to the various tools used by experienced burglars. A "Residential Security Container" (RSC) listing is the industry standard, and it means the safe-cracking experts at UL could not gain access in under five minutes. "TL-15" and "TL-30" means the safe could not be broken into within 15 or 30 minutes. Note that there are only a couple of gun safes with these coveted ratings.
UL Burglary Rating :
- RSC, TL-15, TL-30
Firearm Type
Pistol safes are ideal for storing handguns in an office or bedroom where space is limited or discretion is required. Rifle safes take up more space and are designed to store long guns, such as hunting rifles and shotguns. They can accommodate handguns as well.
Firearm Type :
- Pistol, Rifle
What to Watch for in Gun Safes
Don't spend more money on a safe that boasts more security features than you need. There are many value-oriented safes that still offer protection against theft and fire and cost significantly less than their premium counterparts. You should therefore consider these less expensive safes if your main goals include compliance with gun regulations and/or keeping firearms out of reach of children.
