I got an email from Alan the other day about this and was going to write something about it, but Dave Workman beat me to it.

Those of us who keep abreast of such things had our spider senses tingling when the old gun list with the fake front end first appeared, and resisted weighing in until we could verify things--a good rule of thumb I've repeated time and again: Unless an email comes with a link to a credible source, treat it as suspect, particularly if the sender doesn't seem to know what "BCC" is and the last line urges you to "SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!"

Which hasn't kept those who don't keep abreast of such things from rendering snotty, ignorant judgments.  I've been relatively silent about the "prags" in recent years, because the flame wars are a distraction, and I figure I'll do my thing and they can do theirs.  But this comment  demands an apology, and an honorable man would give it, meaning don't expect one anytime soon:

I have no problem with bloggers who wish to remain anonymous due to political repercussions to their real lives--some of them can make valuable contributions, and it's not exactly like it isn't a time-honored American tradition. But when they use that anonymity to disparage and insult people who work under their own name, that's just plain cowardly, despicable, and revealing of character, or lack thereof.

Speaking of characters, last time I crossed paths with this Fairfax über alles pole-smoker, the "fairly well-connected lobbyist [and] former trial attorney" recommended that I be sued (which shows how incompetent he is, how he has no understanding of the Bill of Rights and is indicative of why we're in the mess we are with boobs like him having access to politicians) and ended up promising to  issue a rebuttal--which he never delivered on.

If you want to reply, "Countertop," you worm, you don't get anonymity here. You lost that privilege when you sniped at a good man from the shadows like the ... what did Vanderboegh call you? ... like the "swinging cod" that you are.  Post under your real name and I'll be happy to publicly slap you around like you deserve.

My bet is, if you choose to reply at all, you'll only do it from a safe haven and prove my point.

They're Making a List and Checking it Twice

But that was than and this is now.  If you believe the right of the people to keep and bear arms has a last resort purpose of keeping enemies foreign and domestic in check, and of resisting tyranny no matter from where it comes, then you, too are on their enemy's list.

Meaning they would like to see you arrested, tried, convicted and executed.  But first you need to surrender your guns.

Well hell, some sociology professor said it, I believe it, that settles it.

Except the graph seems to assume a specific demographic enjoys co-equal credit for a trend, no?  On the flip side, the same ideologues like to point out America is the most "violent industrialized nation" or some other line of bilge as if there aren't millions and millions of peaceable gun owners who get along just fine, thank you, with lower crime rates than those in "gun-free" Japan, and that it's from some concentrated populations where the majority of the problems emanate from.

What I don't see is the percentage of people convicted of violent crimes correlated with those who come from either broken homes or homes that were never whole in the first place.  And it also seems extremely simplistic to draw any conclusions from such a narrow data set that--and one that does not account for changing conditions and effects years down the road.

Before drawing any, I'd like to see someone do a serious correlation of high violent crime areas and low ones, and factor in, among other things (like government subsidization), the single female head of household demographic. Not that I'm representing myself as a competent statistician or the following example as the final word, but I would like to see someone who is address this on a larger scale: Take a low violent crime rate city and a high violent crime rate city.  Now look at the percentage of single female parent households.

Case in point, I did a post some years back using the 2000 census to compare that metric in relativley low-crime Seattle to relatively high-crime Milwaukee, and observed:
Just look at the comparison between "female householders, no husband present" (8.09% vs. 21.07%). 
Lather, rinse, repeat. Does anyone really think there's no correlation?

Sure, there are plenty of other factors, including income, education, relative population ages, race, etc., and no one is saying just having "a man" around is the answer--unless he is a good and caring man. But all of these considerations are why you need someone who knows how to identify and crunch all the right numbers to come up with  models that can best approximate the reality.

And that's why everybody jumping on this latest bandwagon is not only wrong, but those doing it know it is, and they're manipulating opinion to advance an agenda.  Because, ultimately, what they really want to do is keep us from looking at the impact of policies they espouse on populations most directly affected by and responsive to a continuing history of destructive government policies.

That way, they can keep on keepin' on the road to collectivism, and growing the dependency vote. 

I'd like to see somebody like John Lott take this topic on.

Anti-gun federal panel torpedoes right to carry in New York

That this particular panel would arrive at the conclusion they did should hardly surprise anyone who understands who they are and that expecting fair and unbiased judicial review from establishment-approved jurists with an agenda is a myth perpetuated to give such courts the appearance of authoritative legitimacy. Public interest law firm files brief on Holder case as GOP ‘negotiates'

What is certain, although beyond the ken of those who think such things can be swept under a rug, is that ultimately, if justice is to be served, the “end” cannot be “quiet.” Very real crimes have been committed and very real people have been killed. Any final “settlement” that does not take that into account, and provide for a reckoning with legal consequences, will not be accepted by a core of citizen activists, whistleblowers and survivors demanding nothing less. About Those UN Treaties

The Family Research Council advises:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Monday that he plans to begin floor consideration of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday.
The United Nations' Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) would pose serious problems for the United States if it were ratified today. Though it is touted as the progeny and logical follow-up to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1991, it is in fact more of a power grab than humanitarian action.
U.S. sovereignty is at issue on a number of fronts, including that the CRPD presumes the establishment of rights contained in treaties that the United States has not ratified, including the International Covenant on Social, Economic, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). These rights are not recognized by the United States Constitution, nor are provided by existing U.S. laws - however U.S. courts could use the ratification of the CRPD to force Americans to comply with other UN treaties which are against American interests.
The original ADA equally protects the rights of all parents to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children, regardless of the disability status of parent or child. The CRPD would take away this right, obligating our government to ensure that "in all actions concerning children with disabilities, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration." The phrase "best interests of the child" is an international law "term of art," its meaning firmly established through consistent application by other bodies, including the Committee on the Rights of the Child. As one international legal scholar explains, "Best interests provides decision and policy makers with the authority to substitute their own decisions for either the child's or the parents' provided it is based on consideration of the best interests of the child." In ratifying the CRPD, the government would apply this standard only to parents of disabled children - a position antithetical to the protection for parents provided by the ADA.
I urge you to contact your senators today, and let them know that parents of disabled children deserve the same rights as all parents.
While I still can't seem to find the clause authorizing any branch of the federal government to be involved in this whole topic in the first place, particularly the way it's been applied in many ways essentially as a wealth transfer mechanism, there's no sense letting the UN in on the action and making it even harder to roll back abuses.
