He's played nearly every version of gearhead, from outer space rebel pilot Han Solo to 1950s era hot rod enthusiast Bob Falfa in American Graffiti.

And not surprisingly, Harrison Ford's real life interests clearly mirror those of his most iconic film roles.

The 71-year-old screen legend was spotted cruising through the sun dappled streets of Los Angeles in his $150,000 1955 Jaguar XK 140, on Friday.

While his star making turn as Han Solo in the original Star Wars movies was made legendary for his fealty to the heaping wreck christened as the Millennium Falcon, Ford's real life tastes tend toward the impeccably maintained vintage.

With the top pulled down on his dark green status symbol, the actor let his greying mane get some play in the wind.

Sporting aviator sunglasses with an orange neck strap he looked sharp in a blue button down shirt.

The well-oiled machine featured a fresh detail job as the exterior of the curvy body was mirror-like from a good polishing.

Adorning his left ear was a diamond stud, nicely matching the metallic watch on his wrist as he kept a careful eye on the road.

The star was clearly utilising the piloting and street racing skills he garnered over his long film career as he navigated the sleepy Los Angeles neighbourhoods with practised ease.

One of the actor's first screen roles was in the George Lucas 1973 nostalgia film American Graffiti, where he played a hayseed underground street racer.

His turn as Bob Falfa earned him a special place in Lucas' heart, leading to bigger and greater roles.

Following American Graffiti, Harrison went on to play Han, whose junk yard space vehicle shot him to fame as a macho loner and futuristic gearhead.

Meanwhile, Harrison has been hard at work recently, shooting scenes for the Anchorman sequel in New Orleans and promoting new film 42.

He's also starring in sci-fi young adult epic Ender's Game set to hit theatres on November 1, but is staying tight-lipped about his return to the Star Wars franchise.

The father-of-five recently admitted that he still loves acting and isn't planning to retire any time soon.

'I love being with the people who make movies,' he said at a recent press conference. 'I like the problem solving aspect of filmmaking.

'I like the emotional and intellectual exercise I get from it. It’s my utility in life. So my ambition is to continue to be useful.'

Speaking about his marriage to Calista  Flockhart, who is 22 years his junior, he said: 'Keeping up with me is fairly easy. Putting up with me is a little bit more difficult.

I kinda like the earring. Especially the fact it was the result a drunken night out with Jimmy Buffett and Ed Bradley!

Whoever writes these twee, flowery, pointless, sycophantic articles & ridiculous photo captions needs to be soundly beaten with a dictionary and/or thesaurus. Nauseating nonsense.

I am a great fan of the Jaguar XK series, but if I had a choice, I would prefer the XK 150 over the XK140. It is real perfection and looks better.
