Today we look at one of my favorite single issue of all-time, Justice League America #45, by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Adam Hughes, Russ Braun and three inkers, John Beatty, Jose Marzan, Jr. and Malcolm Jones III. This comic is so appropriate for this feature that it even has the word fool on the cover!!!

Today we look at an awesome original graphic novel by Kyle Baker called You Are Here. It is about a jewel thief who got out of the thieving business to become a painter, only now he has been pulled back into his old life (while trying to hide it all from his perfect, innocent girlfriend). It is a hilarious romp with stunning Baker artwork.

Today we look at a comic that is sadly out of print (as far as I know), the delightful 1996 one-shot Sergio Aragones Destroys DC by Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier (plus a bunch of top-notch inkers from that time in DC history, like Denis Rodier, Scott Hanna, John Byrne, Ron Boyd, Jerry Ordway and Joe Rubinstein).

The Comic Book Fools of April – Sock Monkey Volume 3!

Tony Millionaire is the brilliant comedic writer and artist behind the Sock Monkey series of books. Sock Monkey is about, well, a Sock Monkey (named Uncle Gabby) and his best friend, a stuffed animal crow (named Mr. Crow, naturally). There have been a few volumes of the series, but Volume 3 won the Eisner Award, so I figured I’d spotlight this volume (there are two issues in Volume 3).

Paul Fung Jr. is a wonderfully talented comic book artist who worked on the Blondie comic book for over 40 years!! He did an excellent job for decades, but since the book was billed as Chic Young’s Blondie (Young being the creator of Blondie), Fung was not exactly a household name.
I’m picking a random issue of Blondie (#211, from Charlton Comics) to give you an example of the strong work Fung did on the title.

The Comic Book Fools of April – Unsung Beetle Bailey Goodness!

Bob Gustafson was very well regarded by his peers during his lifetime (winning the National Cartoonist Society Award for Best Comic Book a whopping FOUR times over a twenty year period), but while comic book historians still think of him as one of the great comedic comic book creators, the fact that he spent most of his comic book career doing uncredited work on a comic book, Beetle Bailey, that is much more famous as a comic strip (by the great Mort Walker – Gustafson worked for Walker for years, particularly doing work for Walker’s other strip, Hi and Lois) has not made him a particularly famous comic book creator, especially since his work has not been reprinted that often (heck, I don’t know if it has EVER been reprinted). But for twenty-seven years, he did outstanding work on the Beetle Bailey comic book. So let’s take a look at all the good comedic work he did on just ONE issue of Beetle Bailey (#60 from 1969 – put out by King Comics – the Beetle Bailey license made the rounds over the years to a number of different companies)!
